Yes cam chain tensioner was nice and free and no sheared off bolt 👍
Still has a slight cam chain noise but for now all looks good and I think the noise is made worse as on tick over engine is not as smooth as I would like to see so either carbs need a balance or carbs need a good clean
Also it’s got the original points ignition system that can also lend itself to a rough idle
And as planning a full rebuild end of year this will all be replaced and a new cam chain fitted too and change the ignition system to electronic
Catch up soon and stay safe all Al

Hi all Just a quick update She’s now hopefully all done (for now) and ready for an mot and summer Like I said earlier in the post engine carbs and tank / side panels will be sorted / rebuilt next autumn plus a few other bits and bobs including trying to get that elusive chrome chain guard☹️ Really please with the result so far and glad she still looks like a 70’s bike And no doubt will handle like one too😁😁 Also was planning another yellow bike but the red has really grown on me and have a few months to decide Now for a few pics Lastly decided she sounds soooo much better with this blockage in the exhaust removed😁😁 Catch up soon Best wishes and stay safe Al

It looks great Alan, job well done and not many people will know about all the little mods you made to make it that bit better.
The yellow version of this bike and the Z650 in metallic orange were always the bike i wanted until i sat on the back of and RD 350LC

Hi Tony
Thanks for the 👍
Yes I think she would look the biz in the Canary yellow and most likely I will got this direction for the finished project
Yes still have a few jobs and changes planned but they can wait till the autumn
Suppose I really need to now get on with that Tigcraft hybrid that is collecting dust in the corner ☹️
Catch up soon and stay safe
Best wishes Al

Hi Tony
Thanks for your reply
Yes they do poke out a bit but thinking of shorter horn brackets to tuck them in closer?
Also just seen that plastic cover on eBay at £82 😳😳
So better see if I can 3d print one instead if I go this route as if I ain’t got enough print projects / requests already as still knocking out about 3-4 seat tangs a week at the moment😳😳
Best wishes Al

Smashing! A great little slice of biking history there and the twin discs look factory to me. I'd keep her red...but that's just me and also bin the crash bars. Did they not come with a single horn? Why not just use that? Or get two... Alex

Hi Alex
Thanks for the kind words
You know me alway trying to be slightly different from the rest hence the twin horn idea
As for the crash bars I like them and in this PC world they are called engine protector bars😁😁
But it reminds me of my Star Rider instructor (remember those days) where we weren’t allowed to call a helmet a skid lid or crash helmet and we we told in no uncertain terms to use the name “safety helmet”
Oh to be a teenager again😁
Take care buddy and stay safe Al

Hi all Bought a complete replica rd twin horn assembly for the CB400f and been having a play with the design Decided to shorten the horn brackets as it did look a bit too wide and moving the horns in about 30mm either side makes a big difference Also wanted to fit that plastic horn cover but as we all know they are rare as chicken teeth so decided to have a go at making my own on the printer😁😁 Design is slightly different as wanted it to suit the change in position of horns so moved the mounting holes slightly to tuck it up closer to the headlamp but it seems to look ok All it need now is a nice coat of high build primer and a rub down to lose the grainy finish you get with 3d printed nylon parts and then a final coat of satin black👍👍 Think that’s all for now Stay safe all Best wishes Al

Hi all Hope you are all well No been about recently due to illness but getting back on my feet but need to avoid that Chinese virus as with my recent illness it won’t be a good thing to get at the moment☹️☹️ But just wanted to give a quick update on the Honda As not been well and off work, done a couple of jobs on the old girl (the bike that is and not the darling wife)😁 Earlier in the year was using her for work but started to run like a bag of nails☹️ And on checking a float bowl it was full of rust because the gauze filter on the fuel tap was non existent ☹️ To cut a long story short stripped down the carbs and treated them to a long soak in the ultrasonic tank followed by a full rebuild including float valves seals new rubbers and other parts etc Also have now lined the tank too, as it looks original and is reasonably clean except for some light rust in the normal places Bike now runs much better on a short journey out the other day Lastly been looking for absolutely ages but managed to find a brand new unused chrome chain guard that I just had to have at any cost as they are now as rare as rocking horse 💩 Hopefully now that I am back on my feet I will try and catch up with all my projects and promises in the next few weeks Take care of yourselves out there as it’s not good out there☹️ Best wishes always Al

Nice lil 4/4 I have just read this thread being a newbie and I confess having a soft spot for these - how the hell Honda thought that the super bad dream was a suitable evolution I will never know. I had a 550/4 many years ago and remember the front brake very well, to me the front brake lever was a squeal intensifier - if you pulled the lever the brakes squealed if you increased lever pressure the squeal got louder, without any discernible retardation of forward motion, this was after Mr Silver supplied me with a new seal and piston kit along with a goodridge hose I can only imagine how much worse the same calliper performed with the extra mass of a 750/4 pushing it along

I have a CB400 Four too, ( last years project ) and despite stripping and rebuilding both the master cylinder and calliper - I can confirm - the front brake with single disc set up is truly terrifying - nice job on the twin disc set up -

Hi Thanks for the 👍on the twin disc conversion Done a few more bits now since my last post like a tank and side panel refurb and fitted with Ace bars and Raask rear-sets and she is starting to look a bit better than when I got the old girl Also managed to blag locally a set of CCM spitfire mirrors at only £35 😁 Plan now is get her out in the sun for some summer time fun while I sort out the original CB400F mead speed fairing I got a couple of months ago (hence the conversion to ace bars and rear sets) Might even get a complete second engine as they at the moment are not badly priced so I can build a new fresh one and then swap it out at some point as they are way more complex than an RD so may take a while to rebuild one complete from the cases up Catch up again soon Best wishes Al
