Tiger 131. What a beast of a tank. I saw it at Bovington years ago when you could still climb all over it, and have since seen it in it's restored condition. It was captured in Africa in 1943 - the first intact Tiger that the allies managed to get hold of. A shot from a British tank skimmed the underside of the gun barrel and exploded on the turret ring. The heat from the explosion effectively welded the turret in place, so it couldn't be turned , making the gun useless. When the allies captured it, they repaired it with parts from other damaged Tigers, and bought it back to England for evaluation. It was used in the film "Fury" with Brad Pitt. There are not many running Tiger 1's left in the world, but Bovington has an impressive collection of Tigers, and their derivitives; IMG_8468 by dusty miller, on Flickr Dusty

Tiger 2 or king tiger on the left, useless elefant in the middle, and of course tiger 131 the only running tiger 1 in the world, there are a few tiger 2's running, plus there is a jagdtiger and a stumr tiger. Tiger 1 had power steering for the driver, and the feared 88MM gun. 2 commanders really shone in these tanks, SS Hauptsturmführer Michael Wittmann, google Villers bocage. and Oberleutnant of the Heer Otto Carrius. both aces. i could go on about these tanks all day............

The Stumr Tiger is the only one that Bovington don't posses, although they do have the gun from one. I think there are only a couple of those tanks that survive in the world. The other half of the hall at Bovington; IMG_8464 by dusty miller, on Flickr Bovington is a great day out in the New Forest. Well worth a visit Dusty

Hi Dusty Yes only the gun for the stum tiger is left and I believe as so few were build ( only about 3) there is no actual originals left (But even seeing just the gun itself is and is size is pretty fantastic) But unfortunately the collection is no longer complete as the elephant was on loan from the USA and has been returned As for Tiger 131 it’s unique piece of history as it’s the only Tiger 1 in the world what is running and is original thanks to the way it was put out of action in Tunisia and captured intact by the allies and then taken back to Britain for evaluating Yes it was a great day out as promised (but kept it a secret till the last minute) Hudson my youngest that we would revisit on tiger day after seeing the tiger collection last year before the collection was disbanded and telling him stories of his great grandad as he served in the desert rats Royal Armour Core (Royal Scots Greys) from the start of the war when they got Stuart’s till the end when he finished up in the Baltic meeting the Russians in Sherman’s Also talking of Sherman “Fury” was also there on the day and did it’s bit too as well as lots of other history in full running condition Like you said great day for both adults and kids and a place I think that keeps this type of history alive so that younger generations can hopefully understand what the war both ww1 and WW2 was about and more importantly the sacrifices made on any side in any war Best wishes always Al

This is my "lad" Sam, with "Fury"; IMG_8446 by dusty miller, on Flickr You are right regards keeping the younger generation informed about past conflicts. Sam is 21, and always had a really keen interest in the 2 world wars. I'm lucky a good friend of mine is a registered battlefield tour guide, and we've visited the Somme and Ypres in the last couple of years. Sam and myself went to Krakow this time last year and visited Auschwitz and Birkenau. We are planning another tour for next year - not sure where yet, but Sam likes the idea of Verdun. Dusty

It saddens me that our history is given very little acknowledgement in schools nowadays. Even the Imperial War Museum in London had a very expensive "makeover" a few years back, and many of the exhibits were removed, and replaced with a much softer themed exhibition in my opinion. We used to go up to IWM regularly, but don't bother any more. The Tank museum at Bovington is excellent though, and we normally go every couple of years. When we were in Krakow, we learnt that Schools send their children to Auschwitz and Birkenau as part of their curriculum. The car park is packed with school coaches. We watched the kids larking about in the car park, as all kids do, before they went in. When they finished the tour, they were in a much more sombre and reflective mood ! You can see a group of school kids going up the steps to the infamous Block 11; 20180927_101451 by dusty miller, on Flickr This was the penal block, and if you went in, you weren't likely to come out. This was where Zyclon B was first tested as a form of mass extermination, with Soviet POW's the unfortunate first victims. And I feel so fortunate that Sam has such a keen interest in these conflicts. My tour guide friend has commented a few times how he never sees people of Sam's age taking an interest in these awful events, and certainly none of Sam's many friends share his interest either. He has collected a few WW1 and WW2 era deactivated rifles over the last couple of years too; 20190929_103228 by dusty miller, on Flickr Certainly a bit different as bedroom walls go !! Dusty

Yes Dusty you are very right
The pc brigade have removed / hidden so much that is history. (Bit like the name change you mentioned the other month regarding Guy Gibson’s black lab😀) But whether it was right or wrong, it did take place and we should remember and learn from it
With Bovington it’s so different as at Tiger day lots of people turned up with German military vehicles and dressed correctly in a German uniform 👍
Even a German bike correctly displayed a swastica and had Waffen SS logos on the panniers
A breath of fresh air showing real history and not a pc person in sight👍
Best wishes Al

I can thoroughly recommend both War and Peace, and Military Odyssey shows, both held near Maidstone in Kent during the summer. Lots of re enactors with a real passion for bringing the past back to life. If you want to give your kids a taste of realism, these are well worth visiting. Sam and me went to both for the first time last year and couldn't believe the lengths these enthusiasts go to; IMG_7976 by dusty miller, on Flickr IMG_7975 by dusty miller, on Flickr IMG_7997 by dusty miller, on Flickr People come from all over the world to get involved. Wasn't Fury a Sherman tank? From what I know the German tanks where vastly superior but could be taken out with a shot at the rear of the tank. Not a big fan of Brad Pitt but Fury was a brilliant film, really depicted the horrors of war and how it turns some soldiers into animals, others into zombies and others forced to do what they have to just to survive and then face the realities afterwards. Dark days I hope we never see the like again.
Alex
ps I have every Iron Maiden CD if your lad wants to burn them!

Fury was a Sherman tank, and would have struggled against a Tiger ! But, they weren't particularly reliable. They weighed 58 tons and that placed enormous strain on mechanical parts. If crew were to escape a disabled Tiger, they were meant to destroy it with specialist explosives so the allies couldn't capture one in good condition. That didn't happen with 131 ! And "Fury" was a typical Hollywood "win against all odds" kinda movie. In reality, Pitt and his tank would have been blown to smithereens by the Tiger, which would have identified his tank as the biggest threat before engaging them. Cheers Alex, he has all the Maiden music - the wonders of the internet !! Dusty

I see some of you chaps love your history too, well if you are interested i can post a picture i have, its a signed portrait of Rudof Von Ribbentrop (son of foreign minister Joachim) young Rudolf couls have picked any posting he wanted, however he chose the Division that was in the heaviest fighing, the 1st SS liebstandarte. He was transfered to the 12th ss Hitlerjugend for the battles in normandy. Wounded 7 times, highly decorated he survived the war. lat year he signed a picture for me which i framed, his last autograph ever, soon after he did a television interview on german tv, in which the stupid C**TS showed his house. a week later "antifa" broke in batterd him, stole his medals and any money he had. his health went down hill and he died soon after aged 98. matt.

Back in 85/86, there was an old boy who delivered fresh bread for the local bakers to the Fire Station every day. He would sit and have a cup of tea with us and regale his war stories. He was a lovely old fella called Eric - we called him "Eric from Wigan" as he had the worst "syrup" you have ever seen - jet black and shiny and obviously made from the cheapest nylon known to man !! But he was a lovely guy. Anyway, he was a Sgt in charge of a tank during Normandy, and had a few scrapes along the way. His funniest story was when they had received a radio message informing his column of retreating Germans coming his way. There was a high ranking German officer escaping, and the allies wanted him captured along with any paperwork he was carrying, at all costs. Eric was the lead tank, and he imagined medals by teatime if he caught this German. Sure enough, he soon saw various German vehicles dashing across his field of view, and then a staff car, travelling at speed. This must be his man ! He ordered his loader to stick an HE round up the spout, and fire a shot across his bows to encourage his driver to stop. Unfortunately for all concerned, the HE round hit the staff car slap bang in the middle, and blew it, and it's occupants to Kingdom come !! Eric never did get his medal for that particular episode !! He would also say how shit scared the British crews were of coming up against German armour, especially a Tiger, and they were vastly superior to British tanks. He was in a Churchill or Cromwell tank I think. The Germans referred to British tanks as "Tommy cookers" due to their unfortunate ability to burn when hit by German shells Dusty

Aka as ronsons. I love meeting these old boys. 20 Odd years ago I was staying in ouistreham on the evening of the 5th June. The hotel I was in was full of veterans ex airborne. We drank with them through the day and into the night through to past 1. It was an incredible night and they invited me and my mate to the ceremony in the morning. Come 6 in the morning I get a bang on the door I open my room and stood in blazers medals and berets are the vets waiting for us. I am ashamed to say I was still too pissed to attend they were all in their 60’s and 70’s and totally non plussed heroes all of them.
