Where's the Jap spec mirrors 😂
I'm only winding you up as I came home from work and my Jap spec ypvs mirrors had arrived 😀
I'm probably going to do my LC in black Jap colours
Rather annoyingly I had a look at pics of Jap spec mirrors and it looks my 3hm1 had the LC ones fitted
I binned them 😬

Haha, thats gotta hurt! This hike has 1J7 mirrors. Love the quality and value of those I did try to find some Beet mirrors sensibly priced and also easy to buy from here, but nothing doing sadly.

I bought some original 3XC mirrors my R1-Z, really like them and available new in Holland, so easy to source. Haha, I think I should thank you Abar... but my wife says not. lol. She said '...you already have mirrors on that bike, how on earth did finding a set take a whole day? '. Ahh... After I saw this post I looked at lots of pics online of the 3XCs and thought they looked great and would go well on this bike, I reckoned your advice was spot on mate. I think one of the reasons is what was originally fitted to the RZ250 in Japan as they look like a modern version of that which is cool. Ahh the old OEM 4L3 mirrors... they are just a memory now for everyone it seems. They were rectangular steel and came in black, rare in the era of chrome mirrors but Yam were 'getting out' of the chrome look once they hit the 80s of course and all LCs had black mirrors from new, tho the JDM models were first of course. Anyway the thought that black rectangles would suit this bike better than my current chrome round mirrors (1J7s; RD400 mirrors. ie just like LC mirrors but chrome) had me salivating, I could potentially fit blacked out (powdercoated) grab rail and HL bezel like on my 421 if i wanted later as its all about small mods on this project so they might work well as a 'chrome loss project' etc. Of course 4L3's were JDM only so pretty rare and are now so NLA they dont even appear on some parts books so that was moot of course, so no old JDM mirrors for me this was a wasted avenue of research. I was back to others and went through lots of pics of other Yam mirrors and ended up back at the 3XCs. lol. At this point I also realised 'I used to have a set of those 3XCs or something like them...' and yep, 74 boxes in the garage emptied later I remembered that i'd given em to a mate a few years back. Ooops. They were not perfect (why i let them go) so it wasnt a big problem as they wouldnt be nice enough for a fully restored bike, but they would have been nice to try out. Now then, if I wanted to see what they would be like, I'd have to put skin in the game and buy a set... my life was about to get harder lol So, onto the highlighted part of your post: The concept of 'easy' is always interesting with parts. What was a simple 'drop into the dealer and talk to the parts guy' just a few months back may now not be so. Like many of us I've waited too long to buy all sorts of things over the years and found I'd missed the boat on stuff I assumed would be around forever and initially i thought that had happened with these. Certainly 'new' is now not possible, its all just NOS ...and we know what NOS costs. Anyway, let's just say... Your post sent me down a rabbit hole... Man those 3XC's are hard to find now for sensible money now they are NLA. The old supersede game only takes you so far and my head was spinning with 11U and 3XC right and left part numbers (not always 80 and 90s, just like the 1J7s) and a tiny sub rabbit hole with 31As... dont bother, they have short arms and you need deep pockets and we all know those two dont play well together. Of course Ebay has some, but these days even cheap parts in the USA attract ebays 'postal tax' (they call it the Global Shipping Programme') which makes all cheap parts cost way too much if you dont live in 'murica - where the same parts are often freepost! grr!!! In the end I was back to trawling my secret (not really*) list of NOS suppliers and calling in favours. Ahh the delights of wanting something... * - Anyone who's looked at buying NLA parts will have a map of the same avenues, back streets and snickets that the journey takes to buy items once the main dealer supply runs out. Sure, I'm proficient in the game, Ive played it for years, but am yet to receive 'expert' status lol Suffice to say I have a set now, they're coming from 2 suppliers - the right side is much harder to find than the left - roundabout crashes maybe? One from a local NOS supplier and one supplier being CMS who happened to have picked up one in an old stock bundle. Sometimes when they say 'last one' they really do mean it. The box is super old, but the one from my local parts guy is even older (see the pic below). Anyway, Im thanking you Abar for your good idea, even if Ive got hours of work to make up now lol I'll report back when they arrive

Good work!
The back of the mirrors look quite cool too, with the embossed Yamaha logo, IIRC.
I thought I'd bought them a couple of years ago, but it was 2012! Ordered from a local dealer.
I was going to get a few more sets for projects, but didn't want to hord them.
Cheers

Ha, ha
Knew you'd bite and get rectangular mirrors 🤣
I've got 3 new pairs in the garage. 1 set for the 385, 1 for spokey2 and 1 set for the 250 ypvs lc
Come to think of it I also fitted them to the 3hm1 and the spokey bike so had more than my share 🤣
The "last one" you got from cmsnl had me laughing, there were 2 last month when I bought mine.
Germany seems rife with them as they were on their xv550 or something like that. Got my NOS right from there
Strangely Fowlers shows 1 side as in stock
The ones I threw out were like the Jap ones in the pic you posted ðŸ˜

Too funny on the mirrors Steve. I wish you'd kept the horrible old 4L3s, Id have liked to see a set even if they were unusable, they look like something off a mod's scooter in Quadrophenia in the photos lol Re the CMSNL 'last one' thing, its worth nothing that these ones they sell are defo old stock. Its not like they are getting them from Yamaha Japan, I really think theyre just still buying old stock from closing dealers and adding things into stock. My other side mirror hasnt landed yet or id do pics, but CMS's arrived in days... They ship Fed Ex so are very very quick. For those who live outside of the EU its worth noting that they have new postal rates as well... and over 200 Euros its free! Finally their parts are super reasonable compared to the past when each 100 euros of parts cost over 30 euros to ship here. VAT free is great, but not when its 30+% on top to ship. Anyway, good ole CMS came thru with one mirror, just waiting for the other to land. Next week i hope. In other news I added a genuine BEET sticker to the tail. Not very exciting and not a great sticker to be honest. Its just printed on a rectangle of clear vinyl and the white isnt ideal, but hey its proper JDM I guess. Ive said before the Japanese seem to care less about aesthetics re paint and suck like, that runs the same in aftermarket stickers lol Anyway, its on...

What i would really like are some 'Power Valve' (without the actual YPVS logo part) stickers making up where each of the letters is seperate in the same way the OEM Yamaha tank/tail logos are. I need them as seperate letters as there is a background on these stickers normally and its in flat white. When I tried to use the ones that I have here they looked seriously awful stuck over the JDM champagne white pearl. Does anyone have a supplier for those printed letter with dark blue (or as a last resort black) text?

Could you not get the decals done by one of those high street custom printing places Jon ? The sort that do shop signs, van logos etc ? I've had one offs done before - walk in off the street, tell them size and font/colours, and they print as a 2 part sticker - peel off the back, stick in place then peel off the translucent front. Ebay has lots of firms offering decals on 7 year vinyl for exterior use - they may offer bespoke decals Dusty

I know we often overlap with whats out there, but most of us also see things out of left field as well. hmm.... What i really want is something long winded printing in that font like 'YAMAHA POWER VALVE SYSTEM', but maybe i should just get 'JONW JDM PRODUCTIONS' haha. * - EDITED: just seen it was Rob - Ive PM'd him. rdlccrazy.proboards.com/thread/49133/bike-related-vinyl-stickers

It's a pity you are so far away as the image works will do anything
I've pestered them loads of times with weird requests
They have done laminated, colour change, just the pinstripe, no background and even supplied LC2 decal sets in actual coloured vinyl, not printed
They would probably post to Aus anyway

The other mirror arrived and was fitted. Have to say a huge thanks to abar121 as it was a good spot and idea. I like the 80's 'ness of these rectangles, like something off a BMW E30 when viewed as a driver/rider. Tho has to be said that IRL they are not as simple a rectangle as you might think from the pics, defo some design went into them. Sadly no pic of the mirrors but I will do a pic of the whole bike again as soon as Ive made some collars for the rear bodywork to stop it getting cracked by the bolts. The copy bodywork does not have the collars that the OEMs have to stop the 'crush' of the rack mounting bolts. Easily made tho, just have to do it. To keep going a bit further I started the bike and bled the pump. This was the first start ever on this engine. You might recall that I held off as I wasnt happy with the feel of the PVs when i built it the first time round (I should have stopped and fixed it then, but you know how things are lol) and something (mechanical sympathy?!) always stopped me from kicking it into life... I finally fixed them with a rebuild of the PV system more recently, finding some binding in the mixture of the-best-of-my-used PVs and the nos holders and the cylinders themselves. Anyway, I was going to start the bike with some new fuel with the addition of some oil in it... but in locating the jerry can I tripped over the remnants of my 2T old chainsaw fuel. I gave it a sniff and it smelt fresh enough. It must be 5+yrs old lol. No sense wasting fuel when it costs what it does these days haha. Rigged up my remote fuel pot (just a cheapie from yambits) and turned the lever. Only one carb needed a gentle tap to get the fuel valve to stop the flow. Easy to do and expected of course. Pulled the brand new choke on (gotta love a new choke, finally one that stays where you pull it!) and within a few kicks the bike obviously wanted to start. Next kick it went. Obviously id done a crap job on the idles and thats why it didnt idle and needed blipping to keep it running, while i twisted the oil pump to full send. A bit more messing about and i had an idling bike and a garage full of fumes. The oil system very obviously being fully bled at that point! I just need to clean out the tank and it can go on, but i'll wait until summer as no sense cleaning the protecting oil out and putting fuel in a tank and then letting it sit while our 2022 weather here isnt any good. Roll on spring/summer... lets leave El Nina behind! I will need to do a bit of tuning as it didnt love picking up off idle, which could be old fuel or perhaps the LC airbox its breathing thru, but perhaps is just mixture? FWIW Im running the standard settings in the 1GA carbs that are partnered with the 51L cylinders in Aus. Anyone care to comment on if they ever change the jetting on a standard ypvs setup when shoe horning it into a ypvs or just ran what the manual quotes even with the more restrictively filtered air? BWTW when revved the bike sounded very crisp and was very happy higher up the rev range and obviously wants to 'go'. Its early days of course, but seems happy and loves to rev both up and down quickly. The small scratch/gouge I found in the bore from the rebore appears not to be a problem. So, happy days...!

I was going to try standard jetting but lose the snorkel to compensate for the more convoluted airbox
My dilemma now is that I've discovered my 250 frame is registered as a 350, do I return it to 250?

I was just thinking about getting an old E30 325i to smoke around in, funny that. Thanks! Its funny, Ive built so many engines over the years but I still smile every time one starts and runs well. I dont doubt my ability, but its always nice when they work. Not least as I never buy a running bike and most of my builds are parts from multiple machines that never met before they ended up in my possession. I think E30s now attract a huge covid tax sadly. Ive owned one in the past (found it boring, it was a 318 and not an is) and over the years looked at quite a few others but never pulled the trigger, wish i had now...

Steve Good idea on the snorkel Steve, tho I think its already out on this one as generally i leave them out. hmm... I'll check. Too funny re the 350... the frame on this one is a 350 actually according to the plate haha. Rego here would have been hassle for me with that setup as Id have been charged the more exy 'road tax' back in the day and Id have had to prove it was a 250 to get the lower tax*, which would have cost money and effort. Luckily with Historic vehicle rego Im saved that hassle AFAIK as its all charged the same. * - thats no longer a thing in NSW

Mine isn't uk registered yet but the German doc says 350
The delay in me getting the frame was delays getting the NOVA done
HMRC came back querying it as model was 250 but cc was 350 so thinking he was doing the right thing he argued and kept it 350 😆
I'll be leaving it as 350 when I register it

Ok, had a look at this bike again today. Some points to note... (for me really so when I look later i know what ive done lol) - There is no snorkel - I assumed I would have left it out and I did. lol - The airscrews were set at 1.5 turns out, which i always think of as a standard. That was wrong, they should be 1.25 on the 1GAs on the 51L. I need to start this bike again and run it up and see if that small airscrew change has helped or hindered it lifting off idle. That will happen in Spring. I also did the 'after run' bleed of the newly rebuilt (Thanks to arrow for being a total star as ever, Cheers m8!) and it had a big air bubble. Its always worth doing a 2nd bleed after the first run to pull the oil through, theres a reason for it. Some electrical gremlins fixed: - Fixed the intermittent oil light, it was the plug in the headlight. I ran some small thin cable ties round it to ensure it stays in place. - Fixed the intermittent side light, the bulb earth wasnt making a very good contact. - Shortened the lead for the extra in-line fuse for the PVs. I dont think many people bother to fit one when shoehorning a YPVS into an LC, but the YPVS has a fuse for the PV system, so I added it. I'd left it long to make sure i could play with PV controller placement, but Im happy with my underseat idea at the mo so made it a little more permanent. - The rear brake light switch is one from a YPVS i think, I didnt like the adjustment or the old wire and decided to get a new one. Its all silly little electrical faults with these old systems. I really do need to get to work on the connections with the dielectric grease. Getting a new rear brake light switch wasnt as simple as Id hoped. Its NLA... not only in 4L0 part number form, but also as a 1J7 which is the supersede. hmm... Found a NOS one on ebay and having it sent. I could have got an aftermarket, but i do like OEM for electrical stuff and NOS isnt silly money, tho it is getting harder to find now. (FWIW the YPVS 1T2 can still be bought from Yamaha in case you were wondering.)

Still working through the little snag jobs... I was reminded that I need to go and see the new zinc plater a mate found as I still need to get the inner HL bezel zinc'd. This week I finally got the last clean up of the previous owners crash damage on it. I spent ages gently hammering out the dents and sanding out the rash gouges. Id done most of that clean up before but then we lost our friendly plater to poor health... I do hope he's ok. (Thinking of you Chris!). So, simple stuff like plating is now more of an open ended job time wise... A mate found a new option and I defo need to drop stuff off with the new guy and see what happens, but what with going away that wont happen for a few months now. Anyway, the inner bezel is at least ready for zinc now... I know it was originally chromed, but Yam chrome of the 80s isnt anything special and Ive found bright zinc works well and is much cheaper. Although i could just powder coat it back as I already have a black outer bezel I did from a very trashed and bent bezel a mate was chucking out... hmm... If only i could find a rashed grab rail to do as well... hmm... Anyway... that bit aside, I finally added the fly lead to the battery for the c-tek and worked out why the fuse cover kept falling off... it was too big. It seems they are not all same size like i thought, could be aftermarket, could just be some were bigger, no matter tho I found a smaller one in my spares and it now clips on and stays there. Like i said, little jobs... Looking the bike over with a view to what needs to be done I remembered that I do need to sort out side stand. Im still tempted to keep working with the 2007(/8?) R1 stand as its cool, but need to get my lathe up and running in order to cut down some of this stands OEM parts as I need to build up the parts 'in reverse' behind the bracket with some parts still on the outside. Its a complicated setup as standard, more so with what i would need to do. Ive test fitted and I think proven the fit with a mock up with washers, but now need to do the cutting. The parts have become NLA and silly expensive now so Im not keen to mess it up lol. FWIW right now with it on the outside of the bracket your foot lightly contacts the stand when its up and so it needs to go inward, where there is the perfect amount fo space for it and it would look and fit like it was done by the factory. Which is what i'd like of course. Naturally with it more inboard I may need to shorten it as well... While I was thinking about this Dusty sorted me an OEM stand to do some welding on and that may well be what i use in the end. We'll see... I can probably weld and powder that quicker than I can sort the R1 unit lol. This week I've also been trying to sort out the acres of bodywork i have in house so its not all lying around and in the way. With that in mine I decided to fit the 251LC's set back on to the bike for now, its not on as a final fit as I still need to clean out tank and fit petc**k etc. That will happen when Spring comes here. I noticed the tank rear fixing is missing the outer rubber ring so ordered a new one from Yam as I dont seem to have any here. With the seat on, one latch isnt happy and wont click into place. Looking at it I found the cover wasnt cut well enough so was trapped between the seat base and the frame, thats my fault I fitted the 4L3 cover... could also be the seat base needs a tweak, we'll see, I will probably try to get some adjustment in the ducktail fixings and try that way as well. FWIW The ducktail is not on 'tight' as I need to make collars to fit in the mounting holes of this repro panel to help stop it cracking when you do up the grab rail bolts. With that in mind I ordered some 12mm alloy tube with 2mm wall today for that, its coming from china so will be back pretty much the same time as i am etc. I have a bunch of these repro duck tails now so will make and fit multiple sets of these. I hate cracked panels. The OEMs have steel collars in them if you hadnt seen them, theyre in the plastic and painted over of course. I snapped a quick pic of this bike lightly dressed sat on my lift. The new mirrors look huge for some reason in this pic, they really arent. (The silencers are wearing some old socks as they are powder coated and I dont want to get them chipped)

I did think that originally Alex, but there were a few reasons why i didnt but they might not stay on there forever anyway, Im in 2 minds with them. Reasons why not in the middle: One was that the rear red stripe tapers and the Beet logo looked weird in the middle, like I hadnt committed to either the top of bottom edge line. FWIW it looked much worse if you followed the line of top edge etc. Another is that most JDM aesthetic enhancements appear thrown on and dont match any other part of the bike it seems. This was sort of my way of doing that while not totally triggering my OCD lol If i was being super picky Id also say that the logo would be much better if it was champagne white rather than straight white. I guess thats the problem with tuning house stickers, they are not designed for the bike really. We'll have to see if they stay on
