So I brought this 1981 350lc hybrid it was advertised as a complete hybrid ready to go. But it should of been advertised as a work in progress. I found the custom rear master plate to thin and was bending & flexing when rear brake applied. I fixed this by adding a support from the frame to the plate. Front Sprocket spacing was incorrect was causing to much play in the Sprocket causing the chain to be out and rubbing against the frame.

After the first ride I noticed that I had a oil leak coming from to clutch pushrod shaft. The shaft was badly worn, strange as the engine had been rebuilt previously to me buying it. I replaced the shaft and it was still leaking, so went to replace the oil seal and noticed a crack in the crank casing.

So next step was to buy another pair of crank cases to get the engine rebuilt into, this is where rob came into save the day. Rob was able to supply a new set of cases and rebuild the engine for me. Whilst rebuilding the engine rob noticed a few horrors in there so the rebuild was was a bit more entailed than I hoped. Seems the previous builder had done a few things wrong during their rebuild. During the rebuild rob added a few popular up grades. The clutch pushrod shaft is now supported buy a bearing and seal. One of the clutch levers inside was slightly extended makes for easier clutch use.

Rob helped me fit the engine and is running sweet. I’ve covered about 60 miles so far running it in.

I’m beginning to think this bike does not like me very much. After the second ride the expansion chamber decided to crack on me. So currently the expansion chamber has been sent back to its builder for some welding. Only thing is when it gets back it’s going to be missing some of the nickel plating. Spent the day calling platers & chromers but no one wants to touch it due to contamination of their chemicals.

I’m wondering what the expansion chambers look like underneath the plating, they are mild steel.

Will just be mild steel
Long shot and maybe won't work but you can buy diy nickel plating kits.
Polish the section then give it a bash
Google gateros plating

Ok thanks Steve I’ll look into it, I’m thinking I’ll use the exhaust how it comes back finish wise for the rest of the summer and sort it out during the winter.

Bite the bullet and buy some exhausts from a reputable builder You might get them cracking again and if you have had them replated again , that would be a waste of money

Hi Andrew, are the pipes rubber mounted at the rear, notice you are running non standard rear sets, if not it won't help matters? Cheers, Andy.

Personally hate the the look of those welded section exhausts, but what was wrong internally with the engine a goood tig welder would of sorted that crankcase no problem

The engine casing were non-matching top and bottom. The lower casing should have been one with tie bar mounts, but it was not... Not worth the cost or effort to save non-matching wrong type casings.

That is why this forum is so bloody great some top blokes on here, rob is a good bloke. Andrew sadly you shit out when you bought it, but it has some great potential and honestly if bikes were rated on grin factor these would be top of the tree. Good luck with it buddy.

You’ve got to be so careful these days I’m just rebuilding a 250lc but on first look the frame may well be scrap after having it all painted wheelbase 1330mm instead of 1365mm top rails banana shape
