Thought I'd better start a thread on this tart up project Won it on eBay last year from DK I had already "won" it 3 times before but either the reserve wasn't met or I was out bid but the winning bidder obviously dropped out. It had been getting listed for months and was eventually listed without a reserve and I won it Guy at DK not pleased as they had lost on it It was a bit fugly and non standard which I think was putting everybody off Here it is as I bought it Steve

Single seat punted on ebay and correct panels/seat purchased Big thanks to Rod for welding the missing brackets for the seat catches and side panels Cheers Yogi for parting with the donor frame section Plan at the moment is just get it into a presentable road worthy state so I can mot and register. Yamaha called yesterday and the dating letter is on the way Fork stanchions are pitted so need them replaced and seals have p1ssed all over the brakes so need cleaned and pads replaced Rear suspension has play so I'll strip the arm out and get it powdercoated along with the wheels Popped it up on my new stand ready for stripping The swing arm removal kit is great. A pair of bobbins you fit in the hanger brackets so the spindle can be removed Steve

Bike is strange as in some crazy jap has been let loose on it with spanners and was obviously had work done but clock shows very low km's. Tyres are dated 2015 but look never really used as still have the dimples on them Took the exhausts off which are really short but headers are tapered and fat so think they will be a bit peaky Pic up exhaust port confirms low miles and never really used I don't believe the clocks as they say 660 km's but certainly not many on these pistons Steve

I remember this on Ebay. As you say it was listed over and over. Good basis for a project, and it looks like you've struck lucky with the engine.

I nearly bid on it when it was on ebay. I thought it would make a good donor bike for parts. Always thought it had a lot of potential as a project bike too Look forward to it's re incarnation Dusty

Yes Matt, had a couple of things on the go.
As you say Dusty it would make a good donor which is what my original plan was when I first tried to buy it.
I had a 31k frame I was going to swap the running gear onto and use the engine internals to build a 350 motor.
The problem was that it went on too long so I bought running gear for a hybrid build instead so by the time I won it I had a load of other bits I'd spent a small fortune on.
I bought the correct clip ons and spacers but I may still do a handlebar conversion on it
I also have the correct headlight and bracket.
Found a set of mint correct side panels and infill (side panels don't have holes as no grab rail on the Jap bike) and the correct front mudguard.
I've had these all painted in black and have the correct decal kit but I'm not sure if I like the grey in the standard colour so I may just do black with standard silver decals. I'll dig out a pic of what it's supposed to look like
And yes mate the standard paint although beautifully done is a struggle on the eyes
Also probably going to fit an airbox (if I can squeeze it in)
My biggest problem is myself. Struggling to stop myself tearing it down and getting the frame coated met grey 🙄
Steve

It's supposed to look like this pic. It's getting UK spec indicators as I don't like the small rectangular Jap ones Steve

Lovely, what a great project. It's itching for a 421 or tuned 350 conversion, given the better running gear but weaker motor.
Add some triumph four pots, wilbers rear shock and it'll be fantastic!

Well first little "surprise" today
It has a 140 section tyre fitted which surprised me as not hitting the tyre and not looking too balloon like
I had picked up a 130 for it as standard is 120 on a 2.5 rim
Took the wheels to get the tyres off for coating and noticed the rear inner rim was grey
All 3hm1's had gold wheels so something not right
Turns out it's a 3.5 x 17 rim so wasn't original
Must be off a tzr 250 or an fzr 400 as still 15mm spindle

Nice surprise that Steve, when i got my forks done by Brook they did a fab job, about £160 all in with me stripping them back. I was surprised how peppy the engine was for a 250, nice to ride, and with the Triumph calipers the front end was great. I'm looking forward to see how this ends up. Andy.

Cheers Andy, how long did brook take to rechrome them? Used Philpotts a few times but always twice as long as they say. The wider wheel would normally be a Brucie bonus but with the 2.15 front I'm stuck with a 100/80 Also means the chain run is wrong as no offset front sprocket fitted Dog bones are toast as usual so considering a 3xc swing arm now Steve

Hi Steve, around 4 weeks in total if memory serves, funnily enough i've got a R1-z swinger in the garage which i'm thinking of grafting on my N1 hybrid. The only downside for mine was the CDI and valve controller which was one unit so no scope for a Zeel. Andy.

It's a single unit on the 3hm1 too Only bonus is the 3hm1 made 3hp more which was down to the electronics You can still use a Zeel or ignitech, just the wiring is slightly different I think the 3xc arm fits in but you need to make Dog bones and spacers to get the linkage to work Steve

Dating letter arrived
As expected it's a 1988 rz250 model manufactured July 1988
Looking closely at the rear wheel it must be 3xc R1-z250 as originally grey and about the only other bike with a 15mm spindle
Need to decide whether to leave as is, find a 3xc front or a tzr/3hm1 rear to make a pair

Wheels, headlight rim, clock bracket and swinger dropped off at coaters
Spindles and suspension bolts ready for plating
Top yoke, clip ons and risers vapoured.
Trying to sit on my hands to stop me totally stripping it

Trying to sit on my hands to stop me totally stripping it Steve My F2 was like that. I bought it as a runaround. Started stripping a few bits off to redo, and wasn’t happy with the way it was put together. Before I knew it, it was a bare frame. Go on, you know you want to Jon

Wheels powdered, discs vapour blasted and centres painted Just need to get the tyres fitted Forks also sent off this week for chroming. Was holding back pondering a top yoke and handlebar conversion which would need shorter stanchions buy decided to keep it as Yam intended due to the rarity of it Steve

Had to be done I'm afraid. Was just going to rattle can the outer frame rails but when I took the tank off there is surface rust all over
Still not going to be a show pony but at least if I do the frame, swinger, forks and overhaul the suspension the rest can be a rolling rest
Surprised by the bolts mind
After doing many of builds I knew all the bolts, what they looked like and where they went
Well that's went to bollocks on the 3hm1. The bolts (even the engine mounts) are all different 🙄

Don’t kid yourself Steve about not stripping it. The first step to recovery is admitting you’ve got a problem Jon Oh I know I have a problem In the garage just now: 1 x 3hm1 now in bits, frame to be coated. Swinger and wheel already coated 1 x 31k frame/forks/wheels. Swinger at coaters, engine ready to build 1 x 31k frame at the coaters with the wheels. Forks and swinger ready to fit, engine ready to build That along with my hybrid needing recommisioning means I REALLY need help Steve
