So I went test riding bikes today went to my local triumph dealers walked in no one acknowledged me, wandered around for over 25 minutes sat on the two thrixtons looked at staff who just put their heads down and avoided eye contact so went to bmw completely the opposite can we help would like a coffee whilst you look ended test riding an r nine t which I am about to order poles apart in attitude it’s not rocket science be nice to me and I will give you the contents of my wallet. The same triumph has done the same to me the past 4 times I have bought a bike I shan’t ever bother returning

Yes it never ceases to amaze me how dealers can be
I've told this story before but back in 2006 I went to a Honda dealer convinced I was going to buy a brand new fireblade
Staff not interested, eventually got the attention of the actual owner who was an arogant cnut
I was being totally serious and was asking whether he wanted a trade in or if he would do a cash deal
No interest in my 2 year old Fazer 1000 and as for a deal well it was a case of "the price is on the bike, take it or leave it" and no test ride available so I left it
Couple of days later I went to a Yamaha/Suzuki dealer fancying a new GSXR 750 with my wife
The GSXR was on offer at £7500 but my wife being a woman said in front of the salesman that she preferred the red bike opposite it
It was a 2005 model new R1 (it was early 2006)
Salesman said I could have it for the same price which was £1500 off and he would even hold it and register it when the 06 reg came out.
Even had one I could test ride so I did and had to buy it.
Now that's how to sell a bike

Years ago, a mate of my brother walked into the show room of Jack Lilley's in Shepperton. He had been working on the family farm and was in scruffy jeans - these were the days when scruffy jeans meant you were scruffy and not trendy like nowadays !! Anyway, he was only about 21, but the family owned a chain of fish and chip shops and they were minted. The sales guy was a right snotty sort who looked down his nose as soon as Dave walked in, and was very rude when Dave showed an interest in the new Jota that was sat in the window, telling him he couldn't afford such a bike, blah blah. Long story short, Dave bought the stunning orange Jota, paying cash to the other sales guy, so depriving tosspot salesguy of the sale, and slagging off said tosser to the manager, who was all ears when he realised there was money floating about.

Some of these sales pricks just don't get it!! Had the same thing at Preston HD dealership..no.. not looking at a heavyweight shitpot but a Buell, and at a Yamaha dealers in Chorley. Neither of them wanted a sale..f**k them..

Makes me laugh when I bought my 911 (boo boo) and the wife’s cayenne walked into porker dealers my mrs is horsey I’m tattooed beard ear rings leather jacket he’ll both how can we help nice as and no stereotypes when I got the cayenne serviced recently a guy looked like me ordering their used 911 turbo £150k plus Many many moons ago in my 20’s I sold cars worked for Merc one day scruffy old git leather jacket etc etc heavy Black Country/brummie accent wanders in to buy 2 new cars, me morning mr Butler is it ok if I call you geezer? Of course son rock n roll royalty

My lad loves supercars so we had a drive down to Alexander’s prestige at Boroughbridge so he could have a look round. They couldn’t have been nicer, the sales girl told him to open the door to a £350k aventador and let him sit in it. He’ll never forget it. 8D9462CE-8ADE-4BCC-BAD5-6C394714C859

I remember JL when they were in Shepperton and I recall the orange Jota (no idea if it was the same one). I never had an issue with them but only bought parts off the shelf (like an LC tail light when a wheelie went a tad too vertical!
However before they moved to Sunbury I did buy my only ever new vehicle from them. That black Aprilia RS250 in Chesterfield colours. The salesman was a top bloke. Let me have a test ride told me about warming it up properly and wait till the tyres are warm before going totally banzai. Even showed how easy it was to start by using the kickstarter with his hand!
Then they moved...and attitudes changed in my eyes anyway. I sold a car quite a while ago and was after a Speed Triple (old style). There was a mint white one there. 3500 miles 3 years old. Can't remember the exact price but it was almost the same price as a new one...all because James May had owned it. I tried contacting him via Jack Lilleys to ask more info and he never got back to me. And no test ride etc...
Then I saw an orange one, about 4 years old, heavily modded and looking superb. Turned out to be one of the mechanics bikes and yes he let me have a go. It scared me silly but I wanted it, until he told me the price! About 2K more than a new one and with no warranty given or implied. I gave up then. Walked away and have never been back...

It is amazing how many of these bad sales people don’t understand that everyone might be an opportunity and if the place is quiet really no excuse not to engage imeadiatly and if it is to welcome them and plead for patience. A female friend of mine walked into a merc dealership with intent to buy one afternoon, dress code and accent obviously not what the youngish sales guy thought the brand needed..... So she simply walked next door to the Lexus dealership and bought a car. Finally she took the lexus invoice back to Merc dealership, asked for the sales manger, showed him and told him what had happened. I assume the guy who ignored her is still in sales but most probably in McDonnalds !

There is a balance between being ignored or being hassled by a car or bike dealer.
Personally I hate the almost spider like salesman pouncing on you as soon as you step foot. Also the ‘can I help you’ line before you’ve even got any idea if the vehicle you went to see is even vaguely what you’re after. Then trying to tease out of you what you’re after.
IMO a salesman should keep a beady eye on you in case you want help for a minute or two, and then approach merely to say ‘if you need any help, let me know’ and walk off if the answer is ‘no, not at the moment’.

There was a HD dealer in Castleford, a friends dad had a walk round he asked the owner how much a bike was to which the owner replied "look granddad if you have to ask you can't afford it". The old guy left got into his 911 pulled up in front of the shop and sounded his horn until the the owner came to the window, the old guy gave him the finger and wheelspan off up the road & bought a bike elsewhere. Shortly after the guy lost the dealership to Eddy Wright after being the only dealer in the area for years. Saved himself right the tw*t.

Having bought a new BMW in the Summer and also test riding a Triumph in the process, I can vouch how both sharp BMW are on their customer service and easy going the sales process is/was...BMW gained another sale out of it as my Dad bought a bike from them a couple of months later .
The local Yam dealer is such a miserable b'std I could bear to give him my money so looked at a bike 60 miles away....sales people often forget that people buy from people as much as a brand/product...

Now that's how to sell a bike Steve Sounds familiar Steve I had the exact same experience at a well known and long established Honda dealer in Glasgow (sounds like Dictor Vevine but I have avoided using the actual dealers name to keep the lawyers happy ) I went in with cash in my pocket to buy a used 1yr old Blackbird and after being totally ignored for ages by all of the staff, got d*cked around something awful by the sales "manager". I thought "well f*ck 'em" and walked out. Got one privately about a week later which was same age less miles FSH and luggage included for £1300 less. Totally tarnished my view of this established family dealership. Just a matter of time before that piss poor attitude puts them out of the game.

October this year, I was in a BMW dealer debating swapping my S1000R for a new one (with full warranty…) My local dealer then rang me an hour later and told me he would ring me back in 20 minutes with a deal to beat his competitor. No call came.
So, me and my mate went to the same (local) BMW Motorrad dealership with the intention of ordering a new S1000R and an R1200GS respectively.
They were too busy to help us….
Week after we tried again but after waiting 30 minutes for a salesperson, we went home empty handed. As we were riding out, the dealership manager stopped us and we told him what we wanted and that we were sick of trying to buy a bike off them. He apologised and said that they were experiencing staff issues and that someone would call us the next day with a deal.
Two weeks later I got a call (November) from the local dealership with the promise of a great deal. I told him he was a week too late as we had both been and bought a couple of Kawasaki Z900’s, and that he had missed out due to his own incompetency. I would imagine £30k plus of bikes in November would have come in handy…..
