I built this for aligning central crank webs , a bit over built but some tools can never be too big ( missus) I made it to do 54 and 56 mm cranks , and it seems to work very well on the 54’s Still a few mods to do to it but not bad for a lash up Mike

Aligning is for the angle setting at 180deg, is it? How do they work?

Aligning is for the angle setting at 180deg, is it? How do they work? Yes The big end pins go into the smaller holes , and the flywheels fit into the larger holes , the 2 half’s of the tool align via the pillars , only needs 2 but I put in 4 locations , then it goes in my haudraulic press It pressed up to the required dimensions The tool is then split and the alignment checked with vee blocks and a digital height gauge The third bit of the tool , the U shaped part is then used to do the outers Basically a simple press tool Mike

It’s unfortunately not an M&W or a starret ,it’s braded union , a perk of joining he union (aeuw) Apparently cheaper than the others , but upon investigation not so , but we apprentices could pay them up on a weekly basis 75p a week iirc , same as a tank of fuel for my ss50 I do have quite a bit of m&w stuff , mostly mics , I have collected all sorts of metrology stuff over the years , got some lovely miutoyo calibration equipment I know what you mean about a tool fetish Mike

Yup similar , I like the wooden ones , bit of class with them The modern Asian ones are good too but starret ,Moore and Wright , eclipse are just , better This is probably a uk made one , very nice , lined with green felt , others were red black and blue from what I remember This was a rights of passage item , I have a toolies box thing a proud moment Bit like getting your first 0-1” mic or clock , all of which I still have , a verdict tenth clock btw My Moore and Wright multi anvil mic was a similar great occasion

... Arghhhh ! This thread has just cost me £134:50p ! I had seen those M&W toolmakers chests before, and had a rough idea what they were worth, looking at ebay. A guy at work had one, and I offered him £50 for it... he came in the next day to work and shouted at me, after he googled them and saw what it was worth ! :-) I only posted that link the other day, to show the pic of the M&W one. It was sitting at £120 with one bid right till the end, I bid £122 and won it, with £12.50 postage. Oh well, the past few years I have bought my self an ancient old radio for christmas, this year I bought myself an ancient old empty wooden box ! Happy Christmas. Steven.

Not quite on the same level, but my mates are amazed at the fact I prefer using a real Mitutoyo vernier over a cheap digital one.
They just don’t get it.
As an apprentice, digital versions just didn’t exist.
My first micrometer as an apprentice was imperial, so that should give a good indication. I too still have it.
