I was very surprised at the interest and comments you chaps have made. So he we go. I have always called this project the Bakker RD, but that title has been claimed by William and his very nice Nico Bakker Power Valve. A couple of years ago a group of track day guys commented that i should get rid of the two strokes as they were only good for mopeds. This was a comment i could not forget and decided to build something that would mean they would only be smelling my tailpipes. The reality of me being able to out ride some young guns on a track is very small, but i don't think this would not be a problem for Kees. I decided to buy a rolling chassis and put a big bore engine in it. I saw Mr Mellor's ad for a 3XV running chassis and decided to buy it. After i got it home and hung the engine in the chassis it became painfully obvious that this would be a massive under taking to fit it into the chassis. Also i should do some research instead of just jumping in with a "how difficult can it be attitude". Next my attention turned to an Aprillia chassis, but my eyes and ears were now scrutinising every bike which was modified and most of them had something not up to scratch due to the mods in my opinion. I visited PS tuning and Pieter had just finished a set of pipes for an RD 500 and he was telling me how difficult the back suspension was making his job. After seeing how low the pipes were i made my mind up there and then on the spot to get something taylor made. That RD 500 is one of the best 500 conversions i have seen and with almost 110 hp it's not exactly slow. I have come to know the owner of this bike a little and i value his opinion even though it has been a little harsh sometimes. I decided to pay Nico Bakker a visit and after a bit of a chat i asked him to make a chassis for my engine block. I asked him to keep in mind the expansion chambers take up a lot of room under the engine and that i wanted it built for GP style pipes. Later he phoned me up and told me he had found the inspiration for the bike and he wanted me to look at a picture to try and change my mind and have a pipe each side of the bike. When i visited his workshop he showed me a design for a part of the chassis and a picture of a bike for some inspiration.

Hi Tobyjugs
please keep going with this thread, the few pics you have shown look really interesting!!
By the way i assume you know that the bike that gave Nico Bakker inspiration is 'Yogi's' from this forum.

Yes your definitely paying for name or prestige which was another smaller factor that made me choose them. I think the difference between Bakker making a chassis and me buying a donor and doing the work myself would be around the 4,000 euro's top. When it comes to selling the bike no one wants a Tobyjugs special but mention Bakker special and you already have some credit for the bike.

Do you mean I could get a 31k lc2 alloy frame made ๐ Steve Yes he is still going strong the best bike i have seen him make is BMW GS adventure type bike with the 6 cylinder BMW engine in it. You have to look twice if your not a BMW fan. I have also seen a YPVS in for a retro fit. He makes lots of parts for GT Motorcycles in Plymouth for the Honda Race bikes NS or NSR. He has also made himself a good reputation for building Mountain bikes

So the next step was to put the engine in a jig and make a few paper templates before the real ones were made. Just the sort of thing Dusty has done on a few of his builds. If you look carefully you can see that rather special BMW under construction (top right hand corner). Nico and Iwan the workshop manager then started requesting part for the chassis. Wheels and shocks etc. I gave him a ZXR 400 back wheel and brake calliper which was rejected. Nico asked me to find a smaller back brake calliper as he told me the 400 calliper was the same weight as a boat anchor. I also supplied a nice after market R6 rear shock and a Maxton rear shock from the TZR chassis. Nico choose the Maxton shock. Next the swing arm and chassis was built.
In the Top picture you can see the carbs and reed spacers. I deliberately built the engine like that to help create some space. Nico told me that the RD block is very long and it would make his work more challenging.

Hi Rob the frame has two tie bars which go from the back of the chassis forwards. It is comprised of two rubber rose joints bolted to the engine and two normal rose joints bolted to the chassis. The head of the allen bolts were taking up valuable exhaust space so these were changed for some flat headed allen bolts. The engine is mounted in place using four of the special rubber damping rings instead of the usual two found on the RD Bikes. Things went a bit pear-shaped and i needed four quickly. Norbo came to the rescue and posted them directly to Bakker before i even payed him. Cheers Norbo. If anyone has any comments on using four of these dampers instead of two please speak up. I'm always open to suggestions and other ideas.

Tony this is awesome, when you look at the artistry that goes into a frame like this it is mind boggling. I am watching with anticipation I look at it and find it amazing how they managed to bend and form certain parts by hand. I have seen a few of the mountain bike chassis they have made and its hard to believe they are hand made.

Toby, as I said earlier this year, I thought you should do a thread apart from your reservations of โOne member suggested I should start a thread about this bike, but it has not got much to do with RD's only a couple of engine parts.โ
As I said before, how much of the original bike has to remain on a hybrid to still be an RD? Although yours would probably superceed this, itโs still going to be an awesome two stroke, RD or not.
