Hi guys, I'm new here, and I recently bought this really cool RD125LC YPVS. I'm in Portugal, and even though I'm not sure where this model is from, I'm sure it's not a UK restricted model. I'm supposed to introduce myself, but I didn't find a place to do so... Is there one? I've been away from 2 strokes for a long time. I had a Honda NSR50 when I was 15 and a DT125LC YPVS when I was 17. I had a Vespa 150cc a few years ago, but I've been riding 4 strokes since 1992. I own a few bikes: 1979 Silver Honda CBX1000Z (since 1994) 1986 Black Kawasaki GPZ1000RX 1992 Black BMW K1100LT 1998 250cc Yamaha Majesty scooter piece of s... just for shopping and riding with my dog. So, 2 stroke fever came back, and I found a REALLY clean RD 125 for a bargain price. It's really mint! No rust whatsoever. Only needs a brake lever, and maybe a better seat cover. It was fully serviced a few months ago (£400 invoice). It comes with original mirrors (square). Front fairing is missing (did they ALL have it?), and there's no center stand (is it supposed to?). The oil pump was not working and the previous owner rode it anyway, until it stopped, and I bought it. I'm rebuilding it now (oil seals, crank bearings, con rod kit, gasket kit, piston and rings. No rebore). Then I'll check the oil pump. My question is: What bike is this? I mean, exhaust, tank + plastic bits look like an early MKI, but clocks, wheels + engine are YPVS. Registration is 1987, but I guess production is around 1985, and frame code is 1GX. Was this repainted? Because even though it looks like a MK1, I can't find any black and blue ones on the web... Thanks for your help. Here is my black beauty.

Welcome in zalle, Thanks for pic... great LC and list of bikes. I can’t help you with frame number- hopefully someone can. Looks Euro spec as it has YPVS sevo motor. 87 reg matches Mk11 spec, and that’s what I can see- looks mostly original- yes exhaust looks Mk1 as engine is YPVS. Yup needs center stand. After the rebuild, enjoy the return 2 the band.

that looks really clean. Are they common in Portugal? Hi, it is indeed very clean. They are not common in Portugal. It's the first one I've seen with these looks. The mkII YPVS in black/red or white/red was fairly common back in the day (not so common now) and so was the RZ50LC in white and red (my brother had a brand new one), which is the same as UK's RD80LC but 50cc version.

Nice, enjoy. Here in the UK they were a learner bike and we salt our roads in the winter so a lot of the RD's here are rusty as. If you're looking for parts, the RDLC Crazy shop for the 125LC is pretty great, also the site owner (Norbo) has loads of used 125LC parts for sale.

The decals are Mk1- so they definitely don’t match the MK2 specification. I don’t think the MK1 came in those colours in Europe, I’m not 100% sure. Museumman might know www.rd350lc.net/STORY125FR.htmYour frame number is Mk2, colours not correct. I think Museumman wrote this: Europe 10W = MK1 full power 21HP (also rest of world) 46W = MK1 restricted in exhaust only to 17HP (possibly just to lower revs for noise law) Easily identified as it came with the smooth clutch cover later found on the MK2. This model had the superseded float bowl and tick over screw on its 10W carb. Also thicker fairing brackets found on the MK2. 1GU, 1GW, 1GX = MK2 Early production models had Black wheels. Later frame numbers came with Gold wheels and a new white colour scheme being produced in 2 low volume runs, with blue and yellow stripes and note this scheme had a satin black frame. You'll also find these later Gold wheel bikes had heater pipes from the cylinder head to the carb. (1GV was the Japanese MK2 but they called it the RZ125. Notable differences were the colour schemes, a strap on the seat and oval indicators)

By the way, mine has the heated carb... I think it's a top of the line mutant... 😅

You'll not need the heated carb in Portugal lol, I wonder if they can be adapted to run cold water around it to keep fuel temps down in a hot climate instead?

Well, the carb tubes have liquid from the radiator. I guess you would need to put a separate cooling system for that, but what difference would it make?? 😀

And now, looking closely, I find it even stranger.
Looking at pics on the web, if this bike had decals from another colour model, it would have to be the white, but the white has blue and black decals on the gas tank, and this one has blue and grey... They are not the same...
Was there a black MK1 (maybe small production?) or is this all fake?? 😀
I'm intrigued now... 🤔

I eventually rebored it, the original size piston wasn't good, it's now a RD130LC YPVS
