Nice one Dusty, was wondering when you'd do that! Must have been a rather nervous affair but a cracking job. Would car filler not work better than foam?

Hi Alex It's applying it that would be difficult. I cant get my fingers all the way into the fin - it's really thick fibreglass, so getting filler all the way around the light would be virtually impossible. The foam is not an obvious choice but the best one considering what I need to achieve in the small space I'm working with. It's easily trimmed back once it's gone off, and will never be seen with the seat on the bike. Dusty

Permanently fitted the rear light today. Really pleased with how it went. I put the light in position and then stuck some selotape across it to hold it in place. I left the light slightly proud of the fin - as the fin is curved, fitting the light flush would make it look underflush at the sides, so it sticks out by approx. 1mm, maybe less. With it selotaped in place I applied some expanding foam around it, and left it to set for a couple of hours; 20200219_141918 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20200219_141754 by dusty miller, on Flickr The seat and front mudguard are off to Mark Cordwell tomorrow who will paint the muddie red, the seat white with a matching red stripe through the centre to match the tank. No decals on the seat. That will be all the bodywork complete then Dusty

Thanks guys Dropped the seat and muddie off to Mark today. He has some lovely looking paint sets all done for some lucky customers ! I'm pleased with the rear light. I'm considering doing the same to the Rd400, which has the same seat. It would tidy up the rear end and allow the number plate on that bike to clear the rear wheel. Dusty

Thanks to Covid, the seat and muddie took longer to get back, but they were delivered safe and sound this morning. Mark Cordwell has done another great job; 20200421_092902 by dusty miller, on Flickr And fitted; 20200421_115040 by dusty miller, on Flickr Bit of a pain fitting the mudguard as I had to jack the bike up and remove the wheel to get it fitted. Luckily my lad is working from home so he steadied the bike whilst I sorted the guard. When I dropped the seat and muddie off back in February, I took the tank with me so Mark could measure for the pinstripes, width of the red stripe etc, and match the paint shades. He has done a perfect match; 20200421_115418 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20200421_120459 by dusty miller, on Flickr And out on the driveway with the bike that was my early version of this Café bike. Hard to believe I built them over 30 years apart ! 20200421_120114 by dusty miller, on Flickr The Café bike is now mothballed until the end of the Covid lockdown Dusty

Brilliant. Great pic of the brace of them side by side. You can clearly see how our modification ideas have changed over the years. Both bikes are superb Dusty.

Whilst I was up at Metmachex in Alfreton last week, picking up my 400 swingarm from Garry and Tamsyn, I asked Garry if he was able to make me some catch tanks in alloy. Currently I have 2 plastic Honda tanks - 1 for the coolant overflow, and the other to act as an oil reservoir for the autolube system. They would do the trick but I was never really happy with them, and they looked a bit flimsy. So I took one of the plastic tanks with me to show Garry and explain what they were for. He disappeared off and came back with a length of box section ally that happened to be the exact same size as the plastic tank. This was Sunday afternoon. Tamsyn sent me a pic of the 2 finished tanks on Monday afternoon, and today they were delivered 20200718_152651 by dusty miller, on Flickr What a brilliant job - I'm really pleased with what he's done. He took the sharp edges off the box section, and machined in the 2 grooves for the cable ties to sit into. Then mirror polished them. You can see the original plastic tank on the right. The oil tank will be a feed in the top, then straight out the bottom to the pump. The overflow will be a feed in the top, and a clear tube exiting the bottom, but looped up with a one way breather, so that will act as a sight tube. It's been a bit of time since I spent any time on this build, so I'm looking forward to fitting them. And another thumbs up for Metmachex. Great work, and great service Dusty

Hi mate If there were enough orders, Garry could make anything Anything less than 10 in number probably wouldn't work out cost wise, but saying that, one off fabrication is something he does, so always worth asking. He showed me pics of some of his previous work - some of it very recognisable and exotic Dusty

Only took me 3 months, but I took the sheet off the bike today to fit one of the catch tanks ! This is for the coolant expansion from the rad - the clear pipe at the bottom has been looped up and held securely by 2 "P" clips, and there is a one way breather valve at the top of the clear pipe. I went for clear pipe as it will act as a sight tube for any coolant in the tank. Gotta move the bikes around to fit the other side, which will be the oil pump reservoir. 20201017_103137 by dusty miller, on Flickr Dusty

I opted not to have a sight tube on the oil tank, using the filler tube as a way of seeing how much oil was in the system, but as I'm using a genuine Yam oil pipe from the bottom of the tank, I may splice in a "T" piece and run a clear tube off that, and "P" clip it to the side of the rad. Dusty

Hi Chris I do love this bike ! It's been under a sheet in the garage for what seems like months, and the catch tanks were made back in July !!. I wheeled her outside yesterday for a better pic of the ali tanks - it was like seeing a bike for the first time again - probably coz I've got caught up in the 400 build so much. Just a couple of jobs to do now, but they are big jobs, and destined to be done in 2021 now; 20201017_112400 by dusty miller, on Flickr
