Hi Dusty it's difficult to see in the pictures. Do you have some space between the bottles and the radiator?. If the bottles are tight to the radiator it will effectively reduce the cooling capacity of the radiator.

Hi Toby Yea, plenty of room behind the rad, which has a deeper core and larger capacity too👍

I think that tank location behind the rad in full view will ultimately bug you... If there’s still a bit of welding still to do, why not turn the top frame tube into an tank. Regularly done on drag bikes. If you did you would be best to replace what’s there with something larger volume, elliptical probably.

Hi Pete I don't mind the tank being behind the rad on the left side - it's the cheapest and easiest option. I've spent a fair amount of time and money on the frame now. I certainly don't want to start chopping out frame tubes to create an oil tank, and I wouldn't trust the existing tube even if I had the work done to seal it and add a filler. I wasn't even going to run an oil pump initially, but decided it would be better if I did. I did mock up an oil tank to fit out of site under the seat, which is plan B if the plastic tank doesn't work out for some reason. I did a lot of polishing this afternoon - rad, engine spacers, forks and yokes, steering damper bracket - just a tart up, and nothing too shiny. I also bought a cheap chopping board from Lidl, so I will cut out a chain slider from it over the weekend. Also polished up the ends of the front wheel spindle and swingarm spindle, just to tidy them up. Trying to do all the little bits so when the frame is coated everything is ready to go back on Dusty

Frame is ready for powdercoat now, so dropped that off with Jamie this afternoon, along with 14 assorted parts; I had wider footrest mounts tapped to M10 and then welded in place; This will save having nuts on the back of the mounting plates And I polished some parts up, so they are ready to go straight back on when the frame comes back, hopefully the end of next week; Last job was 2 new brackets for overflow bottles, this time with a foot at the bottom to help support the bottles; Dusty

Cheers Mick Imgur seems to work ok at the mo. I was uploading pics to Flikr a day or 2 ago with no issues. Then tried to login in tonight and it just keeps me going round in circles asking me to put in my new login details. Trouble is I don't have any ! No emails from them, no messages, nothing ! So Imgur has a new member, but I will persevere with Flikr as I have lots downloaded on there. At least I can get pics on for the time being. Dusty

Yea, it's weird ! Not had any issues before, apart from when they introduced a limit that I was already over by a couple of hundred pics !! So set up a second account and no problems until now. They keep asking for the updated info for login and I've no idea what they are talking about ? Imgur was easy to enough to use, and is free. I take so many pics that if I don't upload as I go I would end up with a backlog. Dusty

Can you powder coat chrome or does it need blasting back to bare metal first? Polished bits look brilliant mate!

It's all getting blasted Alex. Jamie will get the chrome off before hand. Everything is going to be gloss black. He did mention red for the frame but it would have to be an exact match for the red in the paintwork, and as we couldn't be sure it would be, black is the colour. I like a black frame anyway, and there is enough white, and polished parts on the bike to contrast it really well. Jamie is a real enthusiast, and loves working with bikes and cars. He is fussier than me - didn't think that was possible !! - so I cant wait to see the results. He is going to mask the frame number with some high temp masking tape as the powder will fit it - the numbers are quite worn and shallow, but original, and he loves all the attention to detail stuff like that Dusty

I must have got lucky with my wheels from De Corrosion - they seem fine, but I did stress to Luke how fussy I am and he seemed keen to do a good job. My new guy is awesome though, and whereas I used Microblast in Windsor for years for numerous bike frames and parts, Jamie is the only one I will use from now on. He is a one man operation, and is more a hobby than a business it seems ! He doesn't want to be too busy, and he loves doing bike parts. He was a keen Motorcrosser in his day, and bikes are second nature to him. He is also a mechanic by trade, and when I was there dropping my frame off he was welding up and re drilling some footrest pin mounting holes that had gone oval on a motocross frame. I used to have a 70 mile round trip for vapour blasting but he is 15 minutes away and does an awesome job. He does Cerakote, powdercoating, wet spraying, aqua blasting, stove enamelling etc. He is gonna be on Tv next year - Salvage Hunters or something like that, as he has just done a load of engine parts for their project Mk1 Fiesta Sport, and they've had a couple of days filming at his unit. His attention to detail is fantastic, and if he is not happy with something he will do it again ! www.facebook.com/300099030596202/photos/311168969489208/Dusty

Whilst everything is apart, I'm working my way through a snagging list - all the little jobs that may not get done otherwise. One thing I wanted to change was the spacers that sit above the springs in the forks. When I rebuilt the VJ21 forks I ordered some new spacers. They were longer than the spacers I had, but went with the shorter items. When the bike was on it's wheels, the forks felt like they would "dive" easily, so I whipped the fork tops off and fitted the longer spacers, which has firmed up the forks significantly; 20190805_214623 by dusty miller, on Flickr Another job was to make a new chain slider. The one that came with the swingarm has the mounting points in the wrong place; 20190803_105247 by dusty miller, on Flickr So I bought a chopping board from Aldi - £3 - and cut a shape that allows me to get 2 good fixings in the arm; 20190803_105303 by dusty miller, on Flickr Metmachex supplied the Rivnutts, but I don't have the tool for fitting them, so I dropped the arm off at my engineers today and they will fit the Rivnuts for me. Under the aircooled frame headstock area there is a bracket welded in for the indicator cancelling unit to fit to. I cut that out and a new 12v horn will have room to fit in there, out of sight as I didn't want it on show. I bought a decent Nikko horn rather than an ebay cheapie, and it sounds loud enough !! Hope to get the swinging arm back tomorrow, then I can run it over the polishing wheel. Powder coated parts may be next week now. Dusty

Great job there Dusty. I really like the adapted chain slider, it will look great once fitted. Did it cut up easy enough? I don't think you will need to polish the swinger up any more either as it is gleaming as is, however, I now know your meticulous attention to detail so you might need a good pair of shades when you take it out in the sunshine John

I did consider using a tape or glue but thought it would be a pig to remove if I ever needed to change or remove the slider. The chopping board is easy to cut and shape - a dremel with the circular sanding attachments easily get the shape you need. How "wear resistant" the new slider will be remains to be seen, hence if it wears quickly I can change it easily for another one. My engineering guys did a great job fitting the rivnuts; 20190809_144359 by dusty miller, on Flickr The swingarm got a light polish to remove some minor scratches from the dry build. The engineering guys were very impressed with the quality of the Metmachex arm - they had never seen one before, and fitting the rivnuts revealed the extrusions that run within the box section giving it added strength. Jamie rang yesterday afternoon to say the powdercoating was ready to collect 20190809_150829 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20190809_150848 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20190809_150837 by dusty miller, on Flickr Jamie has done a lovely job The frame caused him some problems due to it's length - most frames have a removable sub frame which shortens the bare frame. It was only a couple of inches off the bottom of his oven when it was hung in there ! He put a clear powdercoat over the frame number and baked it on, then masked it off and then powdercoated the frame black, so the exposed frame number has a clear protective coating that will save the frame from corrosion; 20190809_150856 by dusty miller, on Flickr I love his attention to detail. The headlight shell was powdercoated 3 times - some pitting on the surface was sanded back, recoated, sanded back, until it came out super smooth. He even managed to get out a small dent that was in the top of the shell ! So the final build starts now. The frame has had a lot of work, and money ploughed into it, and I'm pretty sure I've covered all the bits that needed doing. I should get back to a rolling chassis quite quickly, then the engine can go back in and add all the small parts. The freshly polished yokes went in first, with a new stainless top race cover from Norbo that had a light polish first; 20190809_153251 by dusty miller, on Flickr Dusty

I presume it will not even need an MOT as it should be classed as a Historic Vehicle now.

Frame is a 78 "S" reg, so technically yes. But I was under the impression the bike had to be basically unmodified to qualify ? Haven't looked into the small print of that yet. And once I have refitted everything it will need to go to Mutt's lair in the North to have pipes made and a bespoke loom for the Motogadget system. One thing I haven't done yet is work out where to fit the Motogadget "M" button for the keyless ignition. I have made a bracket though so once it's on it's wheels I will consider where to site that. Dusty As far as I understood it period mods or replacement parts were allowed to either improve safety or if original parts were not available The period mods bit says stuff that would have been done in the first 10 years so bits up till 1988 should be fine I would register it as historic but mot it if using it so you have no insurance or endorsible offences Not taxed is no longer a criminal offence enforced by the police. Only dvla will fine you for it if they thought it wrong Steve
