If I where you I would lap fly wheel to crank .Crank end looks likes it's fretted with flywheel ,maybe why it was hard to remove .

Hi Yea, a decent firm like PJME or Grampians would give you an honest assessment as to the condition of your crank. Build it once, build it right !! (except it's a 2 stroke so forget the build it once bit !! ) Dusty

Good work Phil. I think that was the right thing to do, grinding or cutting a stuck component always gets you a result. You were obviously patient and methodical. Plus you haven't damaged anything apart from the flywheel - result

the proper puller, never, never use a 3 legged puller on one unless you intend throwing the flywheel in the bin afterwards, or want to shake your back teeth out when the engine is running

Im still shocked when i see guys skimp on a cheap correct puller and use a 3 legged one. I met a local guy who restores LCs and advised him to get the right puller and he seemed to think i was an idiot as he'd been fine with the 3 legged one for ages. Sigh...

That’s what I use and have never had any problems, to date

I am feeling your pain right about now with my F2. My flywheel does not want to come off either. What did the trick in the end? You also mentioned washers behind the nut, I can't see any washers on mine, which surprised me when I removed the nut and the Fowlers diagram doesn't show any.

F2 has no washer, only the 31k had a nut and washer
Screw in the puller, tighten it as much as you dare, f*ck it with a big hammer
If it doesn't come off like that then leave it tightened and sit a fan heater pointing at it and wait for the crack

I've left it under tension over night and I will give it another go in the morning. My next step is to stick the engine in the back of my car and take it to my mates workshop and use his tools. I'm a bit nervous about using too much heat as I don't want to melt anything.

I use a cheap battery powered impact gun. That makes it easier and just do the job without any other negative effects 👍

If you are worried about heat then pur a kettle of boiling water over it
It must get over 100 degree when running

Good point about the general heat it's subjected to when running.
My puller is not the best in the world either. It has been sitting in my tool box feeling neglected from the last time I stripped down a PV engine in 1985. It's the kind that has a hole in the end to put a bar in rather than the type with a nut on the end. It does fit properly but I obviously can't get enough torque on it for this stubborn bugger.

Took me the best part of a week to remove the rotor on my xt500. Had to keep tightening daily and whacking once with a copper headed hammer. Eventually I went to tighten it again and it just fell of in my hand.

This is what it took to remove the rotor on my RZ. It had never been off the bike in 35 years!!! I just kept tightening and tightening while heating with a heat gun and hitting with a hammer! Couldn't believe just how much I had to tighten the puller bolt, thought it might strip or shear off!😩 Was just about to give up and had just walked away from the bike when suddenly......BANG, it came flying off. Luckily I had placed one of my heafty home made wooden car ramps in front of the rotor just in case. If I hadn't and had been sitting in front of it I reckon it could have been pretty deadly!😩 I was amazed at just how tightly it had got attached to the taper! There was no corrosion to either the crank taper or the rotor itself so must have just been the fact that it had never been removed in over 30 years!🤔 Here's a pic of just what it took! 😀

Don't do what I just did whilst rebuilding my engine. The rotor was already loose when I started my engine strip down so didn't have to fight to get it off originally. Roll forward a month, engine all nicely rebuilt and its time to fit the rotor back on. Did a trial fit of the stator plate first, all good. Took it back off to lap the taper shaft, with course, then fine paste. All good. Then in my enthusiasm, I fit the woodruff key and the rotor and torque it all up. Stand back pleased with myself. Take a picture. Then realise I didn't refit the stator before fitting the rotor. Schoolboy error. So of course I had to start the rotor removal fight again. It was surprisingly difficult, but luckily not impossible to remove. 2 steps forward, 1 back!

If you do ever use a big air ratchet gun, say something huge with about 1000lbs/ft dont hold the spanner on the remover tool, just let it zip up and stand well back. you wont hold a spanner on it when it lets go with a big gun.
The right tool with good threads is key to this.
NEVER EVER USE A 3 LEGGED PULLER. if you do we cant be friends...

Success! I left it over night under tension, came out this morning and with a combination of adding more tension and hitting the bar with a hammer it just popped off. Happy days
