Had a katana 750 south african import non pop up it was a slightly under powered version of a 1000/1100 katana it was alright just your usual inline mid weight jap 4. I did ride a gsx750efe for a few weeks back in the day when we took one in px against a gpz900r it was a reasonable bike and very much of its day. Most mechanical parts shouldn't be a problem as an awful lot was shared with other models I guess that the problem will be the bodywork which I believe was unique to the 750, Yahoo Japan may be the answer (i am using it for my mk3 gamma) nice and different and don't forget Tamiya did a 1/12th version

Had a standard 750 katana in south africa rode down to cape town from jo'burg and back did'nt let me down mechanically very solid but as said some bodyparts unique to the 750 katana

Didn’t bring it into the uk and sell it did you? Bought my South African import from a South African who had moved to the midlands.

I have the model Veg. Pretty much what I suspected, didn't think it would blow my skirt up performance wise and in this instance I'm not after a super fast bike, I would think it has a similar performance to my 1050 tiger, think my biggest worry would be not being able to get rid of it if I wanted to. Might look at a Katana 1000s or 1100, the 750 is just weird and that is its attraction to me, it would need to be a cheap start price to be honest. Thanks for the insight, there is one in a dealers in Yorkshire, I might try and get a test ride on it or at least a close up look at one, I've never even seen one in the flesh.

I have had 2 tiger 1050's they are considerably faster, but it will be cool and different and as we get older outright isnt everything. It has the weird square tube into round tube frame from memory. Try oldskoolsuzuki.info/ may get a better insight there

That doesn't bode well, I feel my tiger is slow and at times gutless, my speed triple however feels reasonably quick. Your right, outright speed isn't everything these days although without bigging myself up because I'm definitely not rossi, I've never been faster than I am now, but to be honest, my Buell M1 isn't a fast bike but it can keep with anything and it makes me smile everytime I ride it, also it gathers a crowd anywhere and I think a Katana would. Could do without buying another project really but I'm quite smitten with this thing, might try and leave it a while consider 1000, 1100's as well. I'll try and get a ride on the stock one in the shop. Andy

I for one would love a Katana, especially the 1100. But have you seen the prices?

I would stay clear of the pop up unless all of the parts are there and in good order. Keep getting asked if I want to sell my 1100, usually by the tax man. Looks like he is getting his wish this year. b*****d.

Yep, fair point, there are two on ebay right now, one is stock , in a dealers and pretty tidy, the other is a bit of a turn with some wrong parts, forks, wheels, brakes, body work has cracks etc but I quite fancied it because I would be changing lots of the same parts anyway. Sadly the guy wouldn't meet me at the price I wanted to pay, he thinks he has hit pay dirt, I offered £2500 but he thinks its worth at least £3000, my offer is now off the table because the tax man found me as well and I've had to reel it in for a minute. The missus also wants a kitchen and to be honest I can't argue because the current one is shite.

Impulse buy Dez and not sure what to do with it yet , leave it as it is or just the little bits like mirrors, rear sets bars etc plus the pipe is a little too long so might cut that up too.

Here is another question, is it possible to fit an 1100 or a 1000 motor in the 750 like a 7/11 ?

I have more or less bought the pop up headlight Katana, deal agreed and all that, just need to pay and collect, bought the modified one and not for bad money, I'm going to blow a fortune on it I reckon. My problem now is that I have nowhere to put another bike at all.

The aircooled 1000 & 1100 motors don't fit in that frame, but gsxr1100 or bandit 1200's do with some new engine mounts, only problem is the oil cooled motors are taller & there could be clearance problems with the petrol tank. I'm building a 7/12 slingshot & am struggling to get a petrol tap to fit in the space.

I heard that or at least what will fit, think i'll stick with the 750 motor as I have enough issues to deal with at the moment and can't see it will be that poor a performer as a 750, don't need it to be that fast really. Thanks for the help.

Another option would be an oilcooled gsxr750 motor as they are not as tall as 11 or 12's should you decide to modify it in the future.

Probably need a few tweaks on the engine mounts but shouldn't be too difficult, 750 motors can be picked up reasonably priced unlike the 11 & 12's,could be a good upgrade if you decide too modify it

I've time to decide, its modified already, wrong wheels, forks, brakes, I'll junk whats on it for something over the top like zx6r radial forks, can you get a wide wheel in the back without making a swing arm? don't suppose you can, might do a motor change, think I'll ride it all summer and get attached as it is.
