Due to a lack of top end power on my DT 125 I’m going through the list of possible faults. Would a weak spark due to igntion system faults cause a power loss in top gear. The engine has been rebuilt and I’ve checked the fuelling side of things to. I’ve been told that the igntion exciter coil can degrade over time ?

Work colleague of mine has the ypvs full power same as a mate and i. His ran like a sack at times, even backwards and missing. Bought a new cdi from america for £150ish which is apparently improved and the bike now starts first kick and apparently wheelies in the gears

Would a fault in the igntion circuit cause a drop in power but still let the engine start and run okay ?

DT125 LC1. At the moment top speed is 50/55mph as it will not accelerate in top gear. When the bike was last on the road 20 yrs ago 65/70 mph was easily achievable so I was looking at the igntion side of things as these can degrade with time. Actually I’m minded to take the whole sytem to Rex’s speed shop to test all of components for this ?

Yes. Secondary windings on HT coil should be 9k ohms but getting open cuircuit. Also exciter coil plus pick up showing 158 ohms instead of 182 ohms. I’m going take all the igntion components to Rex’s Speed shop company to test them Rather than try replace bits as cdi unit very expensive

Might sound a silly Q , but have u tried changing the plug cap or testing the coil without it..

I took the secondary winding measurement with the cap off. Looks like a open circuit maybe the voltage is enough to jump the broken wire inside. Not sure if primary winding in range either. The engine uses NGK BR8 ES plug so cap non resistor type. Getting 5 K Ohms so looks okay.

Sorted. Had all igntion components checked out by Rex’s Racing shop. HT coil was u/s also had igntion source Coil rewound. Bike starting/ running excellent now.
