Sorry to report but the YPVS box continues to act up. It seems that twisting the board brings the connection back. Too bad I sealed the bottom with epoxy. I can reflow the solder joints but removing components is quite challenging. I'm considering getting a replacement and be done with it.
Also the fuel tank seems to be seeping gas out again, hurray...
On positive note I changed the indicators to new pattern ones with NOS lenses, look quite good. The back ones have the wrong thread size and all of the indicators had wrong bullet connectors. Luckily I bought a connector kit that had the correct size bullet connectors and that was quickly dealt with. I also replaced the aftermarket MRA windshield with a original looking one. Assembled with a new Yamaha mole, screws and nuts. Looks quite nice. I also replaced the fairing grommets with new Yamaha ones. The new grommets are not round like the original ones but have a cut. Looks fine to me so I guess I will let them be.
I also replaced the rotten fusebox with a Yambits kit. I don't see any real problems with the set, the connectors seem fine, the plastic seems fine etc. I put the original cover on though since it has the Yamaha text.
Since the behavior of the engine didn't improve from setting the airscrews to 1 full turn I adjusted them back to 1 and 1/4 turns.

I yanked the YPVS controller out of the bike and decided to adjust the valves manually. First they were fully open and idling was very low and didn't start initially on choke without a little throttle input. While the engine was idling and the throttle was of I noticed only the left pipe was smoking and the right one was completely cold.
I revved the engine a little and the right pipe fired up but went dead again when on idle. This is pretty odd since the bike was idling pretty nicely at 1050rpm.
Well must be the valves so I rotated them completely shut and a bit back. The throttle response improved from idle but the right pipe was still cold. Odd. There was clearly some kind of "air" coming out of the pipe but no combustion. I went for a quick testride and the ride was pretty good with a crappy top register like one would assume from the valveposition. For some reason getting going from stand still was way better than before the YPVS manual adjusting. All the time since I dragged the bike out this summer the getting moving with 1st gear has been very cumbersome and reguiring a lot of throttle and revving not to bog down.
Maybe the servo wasn't operating as it should the whole time and seems like the right carburettor has a problem with the idle jet and passages.
If this was too easy then it wouldn't be an 38 year old bike.

Today was carburator day. I removed the carburators and dismantled them, including the emulsion tubes this time. Carbs went to ultrasonic bath again with a more aggressive detergent. After the bath I blew compressed air through all the airways. The reason for the right side not idling and the poor performance from stand still was a completely blocked idle jet. No wonder there was no idle or partial throttle response. Since I only had the keyster "made in Japan" repair sets I took some of the better pieces and replaced the airscrews, o-rings of the float valve bodies, carb top gaskets, idle screw o-rings. I had Yamaha carb top rubber grommets so changed them also. Now that everything was apart I changed the choke hose to a more precise lenght black fuel hose. The choke hose from before was too long and had a kink to it when fitted. Now that I have read about setting the correct float height I took second try at it. Both floats were adjusted when upside down so the measurement was closer to 23mm when measured correctly. After some fiddling they were 21mm when measured at 45' angle. The float bowl was fitted with new Keyster gaskets and Yambits screwsets. Have to say the carbs look pretty nice now!
The intake manifolds had some cracks in the rubber I replaced them with Yamaha manifolds and I changed new Yamaha steel reeds. The old ones seemed fine to me but now they are extra fine...
I peeked to the intake side of the pistons and cylinders. They weren't scored or anything but the left side was covered in something yellow? What could it be? Gummed up oil or something? Right side was normal aluminium colour.
The throttle cable that Norbo sold me the first time was for the cow bar 31K model so too long. A bit later I ordered the shorter clipon version from Norbo and finally got around to installing it. Unluckily it was 1UA so I guess for the N2? It was almost too short for some reason. I had to grind some plastic off the throttle tube to get some end free play to the cable. Now the throttle cable routs correctly and isn't blocking the view of the temperature gauge.
I checked the minimum stroke of the oil pump and it was 0,15mm, should be good for some while yet. I adjusted the pulley to a tad extra lubrication. Modern oils burn so clean that there shouldn't be a problem with oil deposits in the cylinderhead or exhaust, but I have full confidence for the lubricationside. I also changed the oil hoses from the pump to the carburators. The old ones didn't even have mounting clips on them and I didn't trust them. They were of the hard clear PVC type. The clutch cable was adjusted to max and still didn't fully disengage the clutch. Now that the carbs were off I checked what was happening. The clutch arms retaining clip was attached to the wrong casing bolt and the clutch cable itself was too near the retaining bit of the casing. I changed the retaining clip to the correct bolt and moved the clutch cable to the other side of the other retaining clip so that it is a bit further from the clutch arm. The clip is a bit flimsy so I put a thick washer to remove the play between the clip and the casing.
After all the hassle the engine pulls very well from stand still, the idle is a lot better and the right side obviously idles now. This was some great progress and gave a motivation boost to get the fuel tank sorted.

Finally a nice sunny day, it has been raining for two weeks. The engine is working very nicely now and drove for a good 100 kilometers just enjoying the bike! Can't wait to have the YPVS working again. The power is great under 6k but after that the top end is obviously missing.

I washed the bike and noticed moisture in the indicators. The rear indicators didn't have gaskets on the original ones so I didn't put gaskets in the pattern ones either. Well they obviously need the gaskets so I installed Yamaha gaskets to the rear. The front ones are pattern as the gaskets, the pattern gaskets are rubbish and don't seat properly. They are some kind of foam as the original ones are a lot thinner and rubber. For some deranged reason I ordered only two gaskets from CMSNL and now I had to use the pattern gaskets again. I rue the day I saved a hundred euros and bought the damn pattern indicators.
On a positive note I finally got around to replacing the front brake adjustment screw and its locking nut. Genuine Yamaha of course and the 2009 bodge repair with the rusty original screw and ziptie(!?) was put in the old parts box.
As I was cleaning the muck and grime of the rear wheel I noticed cracks in the centerhub part of the rim. I was hoping to use this wheel after the dent on the circumference was straightened. Guess its scrap now. Luckily I have a replacement rim waiting in my shed, it has to be blasted and repainted since it is of the red variety. Seems to be the same rim otherwise. I wonder what the heck has happened to the rear wheel to be in such condition?

wow, scary that the wheel was cracked!
Ahh indicators... yes, OEM yam is the best way, but oh so exy for something that gets broken so easily

Parcel from Norbo finally arrived. I started changing the broken tripmeter reset knob but it turned out to be just a piece of plastic stuck on with glue. I had to disassemble the speedometer but that wasn't as big of a deal I had thought. I cleaned what I could and lubed with some grease and oil. I find it a bit odd that Yam engineers decided to use one type of reset knob on LC and F1 -> but in between the LC2 knob is different. I found out that one speedometer bulb was burnt out while doing it and thinking of replacing them all. Just have to source some bulbs. The instrument cluster rubber is pretty crappy and the metal housing is broken from one corner also. Boy the bike must have been in some condition after the crash. The bike has been to some crash earlier in life and there is no doubt at which side it was....
Well the speedo is working and reset knob is on by some threads that were left of the knob axle. Hopefully it will stay on with gentle use.
Went for a test drive and I almost forgot to attach the speedometer cable. When I was at it I slipped a new gen yamaha one on and threw the yambits one to a box to wait for another day.

Today I drove past a vehicle parts shop and picked up 6pcs of 3W T10 bulbs. Changed the speedometer and rpmmeter bulbs, saved the two left for the indicators and/or temp gauge if they fail.

Did a couple of things today. Got my trusty POS Biltema coreflux wire welder and Hyundai angle grinder and shortened the 350LC silencer baffles. They weren't exactly the same but 95% same when cut. The threaded part is a lot more robust than the original ones. The other original baffle had most of the front part missing for some reason and the other one was intact apart from the inner plate rattling around as the weld was broken. Also got around to grinding the axle of so that I got the pedal off the old welded one. Polished the rust away and replaced the knackered rubber with a new one. Looks quite good, to finish the look I replaced the rusting original connecting rod with a stainless steel Norbo one.

Anyway, youre making good progress my friend. its good to see it happening Thanks, it is great after all these years to really get something done and being able to drive the thing around with some confidence. I have been making some trips with my 7 year old son and he prefers the RD over Jawa everytime A bonus one of the overall situation

The YPVS controller finally arrived from Borut. It is the PPV-RZ3 with 31K curve and connectors. I stuck the extra wire (curve change switch) inside the cable shielding so I can connect it in the future if needed. The PPV-RZ3 fit okay under the original control units lid. It doesn't show if one doesn't know what to look for. After adjusting the fully open position I went for a test ride and yes, the power is back and great fun. Also installed new screws for the master cylinder fitting bracket and the cover plugs to the unused mirror mounts. The fitting bracket that I ordered turned out to be of the wrong type, there seems to be a coffin type master cylinter with the old square types fitting bracket. The F2 one fits in my RD so either the sparepart catalogue isn't always right or the master cylinder has been swapped on my bike.

Summer is now officially over and I made a couple of things for the winter. I emptied the fuel tank and put the battery on a smart charger. Filled up the tyres to 3 bars, emptied the carburettor bowls and kicked over with choke for at least 20 times.
We shall see what I get done during the winter, hopefully the wheels since they are in a bad shape. An intact rear wheel, new bearings and paint job. New air valves and tyres for front and back.
The list is endless but nothing money and time wont solve.

Some progress has been made during the winter. The front tyre came off with the bearings from front rim and the sparepart rim to the back. I dropped them of for wetblasting, painting and milling of the sides. I got an email from Retro Special parts! It was like yesterday when I emailed them (july 2023 ). Lets see if I get some 31K gas tanks, it would be awesome and I'm planning to order 3pcs so there will be a couple to sell.

I guess they noticed my efforts when at least four different parties tried to call and email them. I could have sent them a fysical letter but I didn't think of that last year. Lets hope I will get the tanks and they are good quality.
