How did you with the dyno work at Krazy Kats then Paul? Hi Bryan, I’ve not been able to get it done - the temperature was too high for the dyno - so once the weather cools I’ll get it done and publish the results. It’s a bit of a torture whether to take the bike to James at KK or Muttsnuts - they both have a good reputation and both were nice to talk with and helpful on the phone. Both have dealt with RD500’s and programmable CDI / YPVS units. Hopefully one or the other will be able to help me once things cool down. Cheers Paul

I've still got standard ignition and YPVS controllers and standard airbox with TSA pipes - front jets 190, Rear jets 210 ....
I'll take my bike back in the Autumn and play around with the programmable Ignitech CDI/YPVS controller and the airbox inlet baffles to see if any more power is available in the mid-range and maybe top-end.
It looks like the engine wants to climb to an higher peak power ?
Cheers Paul

Looks superb , I have one ,but it’s not quite as nice as your one. Well done with the rebuild ,and it’s best not to count up how much the rebuild cost ,fearsome😳😳

All back together and running sweetly after a small amount of tank rust and fuel tap problems caused by ethanol...

The guy on the bike in the dyno video is the late great Dan Hegarty - a gentleman racer who is sadly missed

VMCC Mallory Park 2019 - had front tyre problems which meant I couldn’t ride it very hard - still had a great time though .... I accidentally got up to 12000rpm in the lower gears a couple of times 😳 The bike is going to Dave at Mutts Nuts to have an Ignitech CDI/YPVS controller fitted to try and get some more mid-range power and I guess some rpm limits !! 😄 Cheers Paul

Super job Paul....what was the problem with the tyre?
Hopefully see you at the Donnington CRMC meet 3rd August...

Hi Paul Don't get hung up on the std tacho mate they were all way out back then, usually as much as 10% too. My take on this is Yamaha did it deliberately to make it look more race orientated and keep the real rpm down for warranty purposes.

Super job Paul....what was the problem with the tyre? Hopefully see you at the Donnington CRMC meet 3rd August... The front tyre kept slipping on Gerrards even at the modest road speeds and angles of lean that I started with - I just daren’t push it any harder - it felt like I was riding on ice with no feel whatsoever - the head bearings were ok - I had previously had oil on the front tyre which I cleaned off - I don’t know if it was that or if the suspension sag settings were wrong- I tried different tyre pressures without improvement - I started off at 30F/34R and even tried a very radical 28F/24R suggested by a rider who did trackdays. My bike is with Dave at Mutts Nuts so I don’t know if he’ll get it back to me in time for Donington - I’ll take my standard bike if he doesn’t - assuming I can get it started - one of the crank seals is on the way out 😳

Thanks for that info Kenny - it scared me to death when I saw the rpm on the far side of the redline ! Cheers Paul

Hi, Jim Moore of Practical Sportsbikes did an article on my RD500 - not saying it because it’s my bike, but it was a good well written article with some really nice photos for RD500 enthusiasts. Nice centrefold photo of the bike as well. If you buy the magazine I hope you enjoy the article. Cheers Paul

The latest power curve from Dave at Mutts Nuts - it’s very much improved but still needs work around 5000rpm - don’t know if it’s a YPVS problem or a airbox problem - I’ll perhaps looking at opening the powervalve a bit later following advice from Phil on the RZRD500 forum - I’ve no idea how to do that though - might be best left for Dave to do that another time - he might well have already tried that and something else is causing the problem ?

Hi Paul, already tried opening them later and earlier, its the pipe design causing the dip, its not uncommon for this to happen, with more time it could be improved, but only by small amounts, it would be very hard to eliminate fully, and as you know, I had to draw a line at some point with the costs/dyno time If we spent a whole day on the dyno messing with it, I would be surprised if it was fully eliminated, we might pick it up a bit, but would the cost justify the reward? and that question can only be answered by you I suppose Still, it certainly runs miles better than it did, plus it starts everytime now with no misfire
