Help required please Bought 1977 rd350 tourque induction model a few years back found it in an old church ( no barn finds in Scotland we are in gods country haha The bike had been sitting a long time ..but with a bit of fresh fuel and a couple of other bits and bobs it started and seemed to run fine Due to work commitments the bike was then put back in the shed for a while.. A while ago now I decided to get it back on the road .i had an electronic ignition fitted and carb refurb kit fitted also again bike sounded sweet But when i took it on the road for a test run it wont pull above 5000rpm just coughs and farts around Back into shed check everything again and seems fine ..test ride number 2 same thing 5000 rpm cough splutter I then got pissed off so put it back in the shed and left it .. Im now away to see if i can get it running again and wouldn't mind some input (help on trying to get the old nail running A few questions you guys maybe able to help with 1... do you need to change coils after electronic ignition fitted 2... could timing be miles out ( i never fitted ignition and I have never checked it) 3... could it still be carbs even though everything inside is new (except needles) 4...someone did suggest crank seals were maybe knackered because it sat so long Anyway sorry for long winded story but any help will be much appreciated
Cheers rod

Hi Rod, Crank case seals have got to be suspect on something of that age, especialy if you dont know its history. A crank case pressure test will tell you if they are duff or not, the info for that is on here or on the net. Where in Scotland are you ? Im in Ayrshire. steven.

Original coils are OK, I have electronic ignition (newtronic) on my air cooled 350A running with original coils and runs perfect,
timing is worth checking but unlikely as it would have to be a long way out. who fitted it ? it is easy to check, even if you don't have a dial gauge or degree wheel, just a pencil down plug hole can be used as a rough check, get to top dead centre and mark it then timing should be set at 1.8mm btdc, there are tell tale led lights on the newtronic, don't know about other makes, if not sure yourself there are instructions on the net and a competent friend should be able to do it,
Carbs are a possibility but without knowing who has done what it is hard to give a definitive answer, take off, strip, blow all jets and airways out and check float level, it is possibly short of fuel if it runs ok at the lower rpm so it could be float level (again would have to be a long way off), also check that fuel flow from the tank into the carbs is not restricted (blocked filter if it has one or tap blocked are possibilities, I once had a bike that had a restriction in between the fuel inlet and the needle valve, the small drilling was blocked with crud on the angle but could not be seen hence the need to give a good blow out to all passageways in the carbs)
crankcase seals, you would usually get other indications before the missing, if the right hand seal is leaking then it will smoke and use gearbox oil, left hand seal will make it run weak, engine will normally not start (even when warm) without choke to richen mixture and generally won't run well even at lower rpm, Steven is right about the pressure test, if you can possibly get that ruled out then you have a good chance of sorting it out without major surgery, it is the first test to do if you have the facility to do it or get it done as the rest of the time spent trying to find the problem is wasted if the crankshaft seals are duff
