Help please!
A mate of mine has an RD 250C that wont charge the battery. He says he is only getting 0.25 volts from the stator going to the rectifier. Can anyone advise what he should be reading and what needs done to rectify the problem Pardon the punn.
Regards Stevie

Stevie, check and clean the 2 sets of brushes at the alternator first. Three phase alternator- should read about 50V per phase. Even at low revs. Reg/rec can be checked by a multimeter. You get a continuity reading one way but not the other. This is checking the diodes which act like one way valves. You can also check the alternator windings. All white wires should give a continuity reading between any two white wires. Any continuity reading from a white to earth and you have a short.
HTH Regards Mark

Had same problem with my 250 D in addition blowing main fuse. turns out the small wire leading from the brushes was going to earth (Positive side)once i insulated them ie both (just to be double sure) from earthing out on the side of the metal work frame which hold the brushes the problem was solved Good luck
