Hi all, this years jaunt out with a few mates to the Nurburgring will be on the Blackbird, however the 2017 trip out is to Dijon for a classic bike meet and a condition of going is that the bike you go on must be an 86 or older. Now I have an XL500 which I have just finished and is booked in for an MOT this Tueaday, passing isn't a problem but not sure It'll be suitable for the 1100 mile round trip over 5 days to Dijon not actually having ridden one before the LC would probably be finished by then but not sure it'd keep up with the rest. So then, has anybody got any suggestions as to what might be suitable, budget isn't huge, cheaper the better but up to £2000. I was thinking FJ1100, CBX750, Z650/750/1000, trip is a way off so restoration not a problem although not a full multi cylinder four stroke expensive rebuild.
Cheers
Spooch

I've done Dijon a number of times, on the LC, the valve and my t140.
All were fine with the trip. However if you want track time, you need a bog stock bike, or they will reject your application. So I've only done the track on the Bonnie.
I've seen the French just send any old photo & then turn up on a modified special, but I always thought that was too much of a risk, given the distances involved, I didn't want to fail the scrutineering.

An early pre exup FZR 1000 would be a good choice
When I bought mine new in 1986 it was an absolute revelation after my gpz 1100
I wonder if D890SFJ is still out there somewhere?

Don't fancy the xl over that distance
Thin seat and a vibey single
Fj1100 is a bloody good call. There's an 84 on ebay for £975 with low miles
They are bomb proof
You can also get gsx750's and 1100's cheap
Don't forget pretty diversion xj 6 and 9
Big Kwak are expensive compared to these.
That fj will be armchair comfy

David Hi David, the tax ran out for D890SFJ on 1st November 1994 and no details held according to the DVLA website, looks like it is no longer with us. Had a look on Ebay but nothing suitable about at the moment, got plenty of time yet, worth considering though.

Still, its a possibility, could use it, sell it, and not lose much if any money on it at all.

I have ridden one and was a grunt monster Should sell fine as have seen them stripped down for racing Steve

I've considered a courier but the fact still remains that I'd be paying a lot of money for a bike unseen, which may or may not be as described, the FJ1100 reputation is excellent but without an MOT you never know what it might need. Its still on my watched list and its open to offers so you never know, a trip over that way isn't out of the question. Trip I need it for is over a year away yet so no rush.
