Just to reinforce the effectiveness of filling the void left when "cleaning up" the rear end like this one, see the effect Nick from this forum got doing it.

No doubt Nik did it so he could change the back wheel, that's what you call a happy coincidence, or "happy ending"

As it happens I am working on an RD350 at the moment. Bit of a dog when I bought it and it will still woof when I finish! S.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I see a lot of beautifully engineered and nicely finished bikes where the overall effect is that of a tarts handbag.
Throwing money and bling at an iconic bike like the RD350 doesn't necessarily mean you end up with a good looking machine. That blue/purple one above is a case in point. Lots of time money and effort spent on that bike, you can tell. But the overall appearance is, in my opinion, clumsy and ugly.
I hate those pointy headlight units, always looks like an afterthought and the arse-up street fighter look belongs back in the 90's.
Maybe it's just me then.

It's ok, but nothing special.... You mean this: Was just about to finish off the front end when I discovered the fork leg brake mountings had been badly drilled out and the spindle thread stripped. Got a spare set of forks but pushed to the back of the garage for the past few years. Its nothing special, just a bit of fun. s.

I get your point, ''Throwing money and bling at an iconic bike like the RD350 doesn't necessarily mean you end up with a good looking machine.'', and beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder ls that a F4 you are chopping up, arguably one of the best looking bikes ever made ? Don't net me wrong, me personally, i think a properly sorted 2 stroke 4 cyl in a sorted F4 dress is about as close to automotive pornographic excellence as you can get, and i would also expect some abuse about it to. Look forward to the finished article.

Look forward to the finished article. I absolutely agree. The F4S 750 is in my humble opinion, undoubtedly the most beautiful bike ever. There is a story behind this particular mod though, I was intending to do a typical RG500/RGV250. I'd found a tatty RGV for a few hundred quid with a knackered engine and an RG500 engine-only for sale in Scotland. I particularly didn't want to chop up a perfectly good RG500. At the same time I saw an MV Agusta front end (only) for sale in another forum - for £100! I did the deal that day and vowed to pick it up that evening. Couldn't believe my luck. When I got there it turned out the seller had a complete rolling chassis, literally lying in the back garden. He'd blown up the engine after a crash and whoever had taken the engine out had used a hacksaw on the alloy frame mountings to free up the corroded fixings. Sacrilege. Needless to say I made him an offer for the lot and now had a rolling chassis and a 500 motor. So I restored the RGV and decided to have a go at making one of these: Well, an homage to one of those anyway. I threw a fair few quid at it myself until it came to making up the spannies to fit. The guy who happily took my money to (badly) fit the engine, then decided he would'nt do the exhausts. So I built my own workshop and taught myself how to TiG weld. I am just about there currently but since I went through a period of collecting iconic bikes, it sits at the back of the queue. This was a few years ago and in the meantime I have restored a few more machines, usually to good working condition rather than bling them up while hanging on to the bikes I want to actually ride. I've ended up with a smattering of strokers most of which would be well outside my existing budget because I could see how the market was going. RD350/250, CR500's, XT500's etc. All basically acquired for pennies, all of them arriving in buckets! I love my two strokes (and the odd single cylinder diesel) but I love them for the engine and for the noise. I believe it should be possible to keep them going and show the current crop of bikers what they are missing with the big heavy machines that motorcycles have become. So I guess its the engineering that gets my vote. Sorry if anyone is offended by my comments. I needed to dump half a dozen posts to be able to see the classifieds section! I stand by what I say though. Bolting on some bling and painting a bike in garish clashing colours really doesn't make it "the best looking bike ever!!!!!". Nor I suspect do many people stand back from their labour of love to look at the overall effect the transplanted parts have on their machine. I have to say, it's nearly always an odd looking headlight and a dodgy back end which literally looks like some sort of Frankenstein montage from a "spot the bikes" competition. Anyhow. The yellow bike from the OP is of course something to be proud of, some nice engineering, an obvious passion etc. but it doesn't do it for me. Oh and I do like the colour despite the graphics making no sense with the new shape... ;D Screwd.

Yup nothing special, just a load of cobbled together parts & pipe dreams which will never be finished & probably end up on ebay as a project for someone who can walk the walk as well as talk the talk

Would it be special then?

It's not meant to be "special". Its something to do with a magnificent engine rather than leave it in some dog ugly 1980's shellsuit "classic". When the RG500 first came out it made the RD500 positively good looking. I kind of hope I can make a decent track bike out of it but I'm not happy with the engine fitment currently. The MV uses the engine as a stressed member and I don't want those stresses going through the RG motor. It will crush it like an eggshell. I did flirt with the idea briefly and bought a complete RG500 rolling chassis that someone had nicked the engine from (no doubt for an RGV "special"). But put the two machines side by side and it's no contest, the MV looks gorgeous despite all my efforts to ruin it. The RG frame on the other hand would make a less capable track bike than a late 125 chassis. s.

Ooo obviously touched a nerve there, BTW it's genuine Yamaha R1/6 blue Sorry mate, I didn't mean to. Anyhow look, it doesn't matter what I think of someone else's bike. I can appreciate the engineering and the sheer determination, the countless hours spent on some tiny detail and of course we all love strokers. I am in a minority here because I just don't get it when it comes to bling. My own bikes end up looking like a dogs dinner, I don't care too much so long as I can scream along on it and have a bit of fun before they get banned. Or before I do. So on one tiny cosmetic detail, we beg to differ. Let's leave it at that. I doubt if you'll ever see a thread describing one of my creations being "the best xxx ever" anyway S.
