How to make an application for the retention of a vehicle's original registration markIf you own a motor vehicle whose registration mark is not held by the DVLA, you may still be able to successfully apply for the retention of its original registration mark. To retain the vehicles original registration mark you must however be able to provide documentary `proof` linking the machine to the registration mark. This proof should ideally be an old buff, or green, logbook. If neither is available then the following may also be considered at the discretion of the DVLA a pre-1983 tax disc or MOT certificate, or an extract from suitable approved archive records. If you can provide any of the above take the following steps. 1. Contact the DVLA or your Local DVLA Office www.direct.gov.uk/en/Dl1/Directories/UsefulContactsByCategory/MotoringContacts/DG_10012974 and check if the registration mark is listed on the DVLA computer. 2. If the mark is not listed ask for forms V765] www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_4009702.pdf & V55/5 to be posted to you. www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/onlineservices/order_forms.aspx3. Complete both forms and post them to the address below with full details of the machine including frame and engine numbers. Documentary proof that clearly links the registration mark to vehicle. Two photographs of the complete machine. One photograph each of both the frame and engine numbers. A paypal payment to paul@motorbikeregistrations.co.uk for £30. www.paypal.co.ukHow to apply for an `age related` registration mark. All applications for `age related` registration marks are dealt with by your local DVLA office and the vehicle must be roadworthy and have both an M.O.T. certificate (this will show the frame number only as there is not registration number at this point) and insurance cover note showing the frame number when an application is made. You also require a `dating certificate` verifying the vehicles age and you will need some photo ID and a utility bill.. To issue you this certificate I require you send me photos of thge frame and engine numbers and one photo of each side plus front and rear. To then proceed; 1. Obtain M.O.T, insurance cover note, & dating certificate. 2. Complete form V55/5] www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/onlineservices/order_forms.aspxshowing the date you wish the tax disk to run from. 3. Present all of the above documents, plus a cheque for any Vehicle Excise Duty and first registration fee where applicable to your nearest DVLA office. First registration fee is curently £55 The DVLA may wish to inspect the vehicle before issuing a registration mark Postal Address: Paul Dawkins DVLA Dating officer Linwood Cottage Greenhill Lane Toothill Rownhams Southampton Hampshire SO16 8AN Tel 07973 231879 Email paul@motorbikeregistraions.co.uk

Paul. Quick question, I bought an rd400e with thelog book, sent it off but forgot to keep a copy - call me daft, dvla appear to have lost it, the bike was and remains in bits but because of that there's no number plate to use to apply for a copy certificate, what are my best options, it has matchingframe and engine numbers, the original seller thought this was just a pile of bits and not anything of note so hasn't a record themselves

I can do that by doing a HPI check. Send me the frame number. heres how www.aircooledrdclub.com/smf/index.php?topic=33244.0

If its not then you will need a dating certifcate.

I've had several German and Belgian 'imports' (I hate that word as they're all imported from Japan lol) with no logbooks. A dating cert is fine for DVLA. You just need a name and receipt from the country it came from. Note: this was for the pre-online system when you filled in a VAT 414. I'll be doing a couple next month, so will update if it's changed. Every other person must have a German friend to provide the above, the amount of German bikes in the UK now! Also if you have a non EU bike with a frame number that doesn't give the game away, then just do the above. i.e 10W, 10V, 4L0, 4L1 could have come from anywhere If your bike blatantly comes from outside the EU, then you have to pay a bit of duty, I say a bit as you're not going to admit you paid UK nostalgia tax right ? Strictly speaking you should pay duty on the bike and the transport fees i.e importing a bike to a port from Japan won't get released with out all the bills being taxed. If you pay a bike transporter £450 to pick up a Swiss bike and he gets nobbled, that goes on to the bill thank you very much. Which is why some dealers will.. ahem.. point out that you probably imported it yourself to avoid complications and extra costs Oh and a quick moan that the £55 DVLA wants, is a bloody rip off for old bikes.especially when you have a 50 euro scooter to register for your nephew I understand the same fee would be paid by someone buying a new Ferrari (that fee went from £26 to £38 to £55 in a matter of a couple of years, whose wages rose that % ?)

Hi Paul. I wish I had found this earlier. I'm fairly well advanced with trying to get the reg from the green slip that came with my bike. So far:- a) I submitted a request to get C plate that I thought came with the bike. b) DVLA requested I have the bike inspected at my local DVLA off ice in Shrewsbury. Done. c) Had a couple of calls with DVLA Swansea, they have been extremely helpful & I genuinely can't believe the effort they're putting in. d) Been told today that the frame appears to be a D reg & the DVLA are attempting to contact the last known owner to verify it's status. e) My fingers are crossed & I'm off on hols for next few weeks so that will take my mind off it while the process to take it's course.
I think your way would have saved me fair a bit of faffing about. I know two things for next time 1) Be more careful when buying. 2) Do more research on the best way to get out of the hole I have dug for myself.
Cheers. Goody

Hi Paul,
I bought a pile of parts, Triumph T140V frame and various tr6 and 120r parts that will make a bike (I like to buy no hopers that way purists don't get upset when I make a special out of it), I think the frame is uk, can I find out what its registration was before I waste time and money on it?
Thanks
Andy

Hi Paul When applying for the dating certificates will emailed photos to you be ok. I also understand you can run a check to see if a bike has a registration from it's frame number.I need this doing on my Honda CB160 which has been raced and lost its registration.
