Hi,
After spending the last two years in the Middle East im back in the UK and can finally set about rebuilding my LC.
I bought the bike a couple of years ago, its a 4LO fitted with a YPVS motor. I wasn't sure which route i wanted to take with the rebuild but have finally decided to build an older TZ style racer.
I am currently rounding up various bits and pieces for the project but was wondering about wheels. Although id like to use wire wheels i can not justify the price. My 4LO frame is fitted with a metmechex swing arm and i have the option of using the original forks or the forks from a later F2 bike that i have.
Any ideas from the fountain of knowledge available on this excellent forum would be greatly appreciated.
Im looking to build an old style looking racer for pleasure use. Old style bubble screen fairing, single race seat, clip ons etc.
Thanks in advance.

Now that I've had a moment to actually Study the Photos: Errr Why 17" wheels? They don't quite "fit'...Tz's used 18's Also suggest you take those K'N pod filters and flush them down yr toilet.. Yes, they are that bad . What's up with the Plumbers' Tubing as fuel lines? Other question that comes to mind: what are you going to DO with it? Clearly it's not street legal and Beautifull as I think it looks, it's highly unlikely to be competitive.. What with K&n Pods, 26mm carbs, LC forks & Shock etc

Well done Mogster,
Now that is just the sort of thing i had in mind except mine will be road legal (Daytime MOT).
Whilst it may not be competitive, it will certainly turn heads and give its owner a broad grin!
What more could you ask for? Plus you get to sell all the original LC parts on Ebay for stupid money.
Thanks for sharing your photos with us.

Hi Jonno,
Interestingly enough, i had a project the same as you wish to do under way. stopped it many years ago due to money issues. I still have it and got as far as getting it built as a proto type fully built but not finished painted ect, as they were lots of mods to do.
The nice thing about the early tz up to the 'e' i think is they are pretty much compatible with the lc as the lc derived from the tz racing bike. Later models used the low Boyd frame style which is where the pv came from.
They are fun and relatively easy to work with chopping parts.
I might have some pics of it somewhere in its crap state of proto type. I love them a classic cafe style racer. seeing pics and reading spurs me on to dig it out the shed.
I ended up using Astra lights on mine and easy option but the down side is no cush drive from memory. so that's something i had to look into machining up. I wanted to use spoke wheels if possible but at that time i found it impossible to source the right hub without making one. ( twin disk hub fr the front) Mine was going to be a bit more heavily modded than mogsters and road legal with lights.
If i can find some pics ill dig them out and give them a scan
Regards,
Scott (ward engineering)

it might not be competitive but last time i had it out at knockhill i was getting 1min 3secs a lap and it just pissed over most bikes there on the corners , it now has a fzr400 rear shock , longer and fits straight in .I've heard all the tales about k/n filters but what is the option ?? don't want open carbs as the engine is not tuned . i went for 17"wheels for more choise in rubber thats the only reason . i might change the front end after this year and i would like to find a twin disc front hub , even if i have to get it re-spoked into the rim i have . thanks for the comments guys , just waiting to get back to the UK from work to ride it now

I go along wholeheartedly with all comments on pod type filters. They do and will never give a 2 stroke what it needs, cool still air the emphasis on 'still'. also with the volume the engine desires. You do have an option to put in an air box all be it a custom made one. it could be fabbed from plastics easily or 'sc' range of aluminium sheet.. these were the options i would have used on my project Nice job mate i love the classic look beats any modded standard lc. true classic. Kind regards, Scott (ward engineering)

Love it mogster Soon you'll have some goon saying you have the wrong color nut or wrong color petrol pipe Full credit to you buddy! It is possible to run bikes on pod filters as I have on several of my bikes yes it does depend of state of tune and will take a bit of fiddling and adjusting! but I personally like the look of the pod filters and feel it will spoil the look if you fabricated a ugly box in it's place!

Yeh , your right , it took a while to get the jetting for this set up and as I'm not racing the thing i think I'll stick with it the way it is , plug chops after 20 min session on the track are spot on so leave it while it's going ;D ;D great saying that , plus some Castor oil in the tank and hey presto back to the seventies ha ha ha

Scott0031,
I d love to see the pics of your project too.
Mogster, did you grind off all the unnecessary lugs etc off your frame?

Post by mogster on Mar 7, 2008 20:21:35 GMT 1
Yes , i ground off all the lugs i didn't need and also had to modify the frame near the head stock to allow the tank to fit . i added bracing round the modified area and it probably is stronger now than standard . apart from that it all went together quite easy , wheel allignment for the back wheel was about the most difficult bit , with a 140 back tyre there is only about 3-4 mm each side . a laser pen helped line up the sprokets .

very nice , completely different approach very very personal, if YOU like it (like we all do) then that's all that matters . (you only need a brake light for a day time mot)

Scott0031, I d love to see the pics of your project too. Mogster, did you grind off all the unnecessary lugs etc off your frame? Here you go Jonno, sorry about the quality. scanner decided it no longer wants to work on xp with 98 software. hummmmmmmmmmmmmm wonder why. Only way was to take a pic of the pic with my digi. I worked out this pic is 20 years old............ ;D I was that same age back then too. Gives you the general idea, but if i ever do it a lot will change again as i started making many more bike parts since 20 years ago. so i do have a twin tube gull arm i made. that might find its way on it plus many other bits and bobs. Regards, scott

I've got enough bits to build one and was wondering what the hell I could do with it. (Missus issues) Big green foam Pod filters are alegedly 'Fine'. It's the Shiny chrome end on the K&N's that has resonance issues and is the problem source with those. Competitive.. meant that while it's good fun to chase around ..being 'Fastest' is Good Too :-)

nothing wrong with constructive criticism , i did have a look for some other filters and saw some of those foam type . any track day i've been at i've been the only 2 stroke there , so it certainly is a chase LOL Cheers Dude
