You think it could make such a difference mate? Before the head gasket went, I ran it last summer and it was fine, never overheated once and always had that rad cover on. Just had the pump apart, its fine. Flushed out system out, replaced coolant. Still gets insanely hot. Ran the bike flat out in top for approx 30 seconds. Pulled over and there was steam visible in my headlight beam. There was water all over the L/H side of the engine and I can only assume it was either from the head gasket or expansion tank It was at nearly 3/4 on temp guage, pipe was untouchable as was head barrel area. By process of elimination it must be either the headgasket causing air locks OR the rad grill OR perhaps a clogged silencer? But now the battery has stopped charging as well

Never had much problems regarding airlocks with my mk2 but it didn't like pattern head gaskets for some reason

a clogged exhaust should reduce performance though!

Yeah I will get the head skimmed and fit a genuine gasket, It has been through 3 pattern gaskets and they have all leaked from the off. I'm thinking that the top of the cylinder might be warped as well because I had a spare straight head and that didn't work either. Clutch bearing appears to be noisy, will have to check crank bearings tomorrow. Doing my test and getting a diesel is tempting

Its deffo fitted correctly gaz mate.
It just can't be anything else except a blown gasket/warped head.
Any other suggestions for causes?

you could try bleeding all the air out the head by taking the temp sender out in case you have an air lock, but obviously you're going to have to change tth gasket and make sure everything else isn't warped etc first!
I've got no idea how hot mine actually gets, but my old micron melted a jacket which fell onto it!

Sorry if I hijack the thread but is genuine gaskets the black ones in metal? I've seen ones that are in fibre material with a metal ring around the bore aswell. Not sure what I have tbh, I got the black one that consists of 3 layers of metal. It's for a Mk1 if that matters.
