SUPERSTITION STORY
Motorcycling – especially racing motorcycling – remembers people for many reasons, not just for winning Championships. And some riders are very fondly recalled even if their racing statistics are not spectacular. Front row of the grid in this category must surely be Walter Migliorati.
To be clear, in his entire GP career, the Bresciano born rider did not take a podium. In fact, he did not even trouble the top ten (his best placing being a lone 11th place). No, this brave soul who rode in the pre traction-control age is chiefly remembered for wearing a pair of women’s briefs on his head before putting his crash helmet on at the 1982 500cc German Grand Prix.
Superstition is not rare in motorcycle racing. Barry Sheene wore the same Gary Nixon T shirt in every race, Marco Lucchinelli wore a neck tie under his leathers (dangerous) and Guido Paci wore the same socks for every race…. Unwashed (Phew!!); so at least Migliorati was in “good company”.
Migliorati would wear the used underwear of a willing paddock autograph hunter or cigarette promotional girl on his head, fix his helmet on and ride his privately entered Suzuki RG500 alongside the world’s greats. He openly admitted he stood little chance of a win against the full factory machines but that did not stop him trying his best….. both on and off track.
A fiery and impulsive character, Migliorati’s emotions did also swap him from figure of fun to demon sometimes such as when he was fined $1000USD for punching Frenchman, Marc Fontan after an on-track incident.
Nowadays the twice married 74 year old lives the quiet life in Brescia managing a bar. So, if you are ever in Northern Italy and fancy a quick coffee or a beer don’t be surprised if the barman has a pair of women’s briefs on his head – have a drink, enjoy his stories… just make sure he does not punch you! 😉
