But is the expansion bottle not there as a system checker If you fill it to the centre of the min/max it in normal use should stay there and should be part of your usual routine checks If the head is starting to leak the level will be higher as the excess pressure in the cooling system and the introduction of air will make the level rise If you have a coolant leak that is not excessive the level will drop Nearly every vehicle has them, there must be a reason for them Running with it empty is another thing, that's a choice for whatever reason you have Steve Most Japanese cars used the same system, ie a non pressurised, vented header tank. Most cars now use a fully pressurised system (including the header tank with air space that's compressible) and no vent. It's also the main reason why you shouldn't use red (more modern) coolant in the Yamaha Lc range.

Each to their own π And before anybody says it I know a Tesla does not have an exp tank π€£ Steve Is it possible to equate a battery as being similar to an expansion tank

Colour refers to type, ie chemical make up.
Red coolant is good stuff, with a 5 year fill life. It works great, but with one draw back. It doesn't like being constantly exposed to fresh air (oxygen is the bad boy here). This shortens its normally long (anti corrosive) life.
In a fully sealed system under normal circumstances it is never exposed to fresh air.

I got all confused a while ago, people going on about silicates causing problems with RF900 water pumps, 3 different colours, I think, green, blue, pink (red) I just stuck with what was in it, green. Never got a satisfactory answer as to why blue was not good enough, gave up trying to understand, and just fill with whatever is in the car/bike when emptying. Be nice to have a laymen's answer we can all understand.

Problem now, Tony, is that coolant is rapidly becoming like oil, manufacturer specific.
Halfords for example has at least 12 different types of 5/30 oil. Crazy!

Apparently the different types of oil is to do with the particulate filters(DPF) and the blocking of them, im not convinced. Anti freeze may affect seals or the ally in the system, but again not fully convinced.
