JonWDon't kid yourself that the drain plug gets removed now Brother in law works on and off as a mechanic He says they modern cars are a pain with all the panels underneath now They use a vacuum drain pump that goes in the dipstick hole 😁 Steve

That’s what I do, brilliant tool. Only small amount of oil left in the sump and most filters are accessible from the top, underneath the plastic cover.

Forgive my naivety but didn’t drain plugs use to have magnets to trap the swarf? So if you’re sucking the oil out potentially are you pulling the swarf back into the engine?

I don't get it either.
For the little extra time it takes to get pretty much every drop of old oil out and check/clean the sump plug at the same time, why cut corners like that on an annual job (2yrs in a lot of cases now).

Exactly,....I have never liked the idea of sucking oil out of an engine that way, draining via the sump is much better in my opinion.

There was me thinking I was cynical 😁 Lol, its just #DealerLife Ive no experience of the sucking tool, but that would be even better to save time and hassle. Roll on electric cars... even less to do lol.

My car has a 21k service frequency but I always change the oil n filter mid term. I have never seen any swarf on the drain plug and I’m not sure it has a magnet in it. The small pipe sucks the oil from down the dipstick and doesn’t draw it from the drain plug on my car. I don’t have any concerns. Just saves time and fannying around with ramps.

Think I'm the lucky one here. My truck was made in 1981. No electric buggery to mess with, only has 3 fuses. My latest car is the most modern thing I've ever owned, 2003 vintage. Servicing I do myself but I am awaiting the day when something electric makes it uneconomical to repair. Seeing it cost £400 and has lasted over a year...am I bovvered?
