Any one give me a clue { photo if poss} where is the drain hole located? I assume there is one that leads to the pipe off the back of the tank. Have unbolted filler cap but there is a lot of rust and nothing obviously visible!

What do you mean by drain hole?
Are you on about the vent?

If it's blocked with rust you are probably f*cked
Had it once and could I unblock it...

I never really thought about it draining water? I’ve always thought it a vent to stop the fuel tank starting to vacuum up as the level drops. Jon

I've always though that the tanks vent through the fuel Cap itself and that hole drains out any water or fuel that accumulates there to stop it getting in the tank ?.

Correct The tank vent is within the cap The drain is simply a steel tube that runs from the cap recess and out the bottom corner. It doesn't connect to the inside at all and seems to only be there to drain any water out that gets past the cap outer rubber or if you overflow the tank with petrol it wll drain away out the tube rather than puddle in the cap recess. Jon My 64000 mile 350R disagrees with that Had a puddle under the cap and would let water into the tank when opened Tried clearing the pipe from both ends but could only get about 2 inches each end clear then rest was solid with rust The bike was an absolute sh1tter lol Steve

Thought I would get that in there before Veg.

I think I’d have connected a longer pipe to the back and rigged up a bottle to the other end with Deox-c in it held higher than the tank cap.

Jon It was in my pre deox c days so was unaware I sold it on ebay (with the blockage in the description) as the inside was a little rusty due to the water getting in This was back in the days when you could pick up a mint f2 tank for £70 Hell the whole bike was only £500 Steve

So I found the hole and after 30 min of poking around from either end with a coathanger got it clear, unfortunately there are quite a few other drain holes too! If[??] a good one turns up what sort of money do they go for?

Have you seen, Norbo is looking for deposits for 31k and F2 tanks in aluminium. I think he wanted 5 orders to go ahead. £750 though.

Brazing or silver solder works but you need to get rid of the rust first
I'd say from where that has rusted it's been from the outside in as usually the bottom seams
If you were going to tackle it I'd think it would be a case of blasting then with a punch make a don't at each hole then the small ones can just be brazed up and the larger ones get a coat hanger and bend the end so you can poke it in the hole and take up most of the hole before brazing around it then cut off the coat hanger
Bit of filler should sort it then
I'd still put a liner in after that as paint is too expensive to ruin if it weeps anywhere

Seen that, might be expensive but might also be the only option for the future...... and if enough people want one in the future the price may come down lower.. At the end of the day you may be better off with a brand new tank especially if you are spending hundreds on a new paint job.. imagine doing that only to find more leaks ...
