the rev counter was a bit 'lazy' when I fired the 350lc up, it moved off zero but didn't get very high and didn't correlate with the engine revs, I've ordered a cable for it, but when I remove the old cable it seemed ok, it moved fairly freely and wasn't broken. So I'm wondering if I can remove and inspect the tacho drive from the top case without splitting the engine? Or could the problem be inside the clocks? Any thoughts? cheers Sean

I'm no expert in this area, but that sounds like an issue with the clocks Sean. The drive from the engine is lightly loaded and long lasting, normally. The other lads will know better.

More likely to be the gauge, probably got gummed lubricant in its workings. Regarding the tacho drive mechanism, it’s an engine out and cases split job to inspect that area, although it is unlikely that the fault lies there. A couple of things that you can try, with an electric drill connect the cable from the tacho to the drill and spin it up, you won’t get a big reading but it should be steady. Disconnect the cable from the tacho and point it away from the bike, still connected to the cases and run the bike on the stand. One of these should point you in the right area.

Move the cable from the speedo to the rev counter and take it for a ride. See what happens

Maybe it's a bit stuck from the bike not being ridden? Few squirts of WD and take her out for a blast, might clear the problem up!
