Hi Ive just bought a new project off a " friend". A supposedly1983 RD350YPVS. The majority of the bike is there so I was quite happy with my purchase until I got home.
There is no engine number or frame number. I know this will make it difficult to register, but it will make it hard to order spares. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can identify exactly what model it is.

Has it got a number plate?

If it's not registered already, I think you'll be splitting it and selling as spares, but probably only good enough to chop up at a guess.

You will most likely have to buy a frame and engine cases.

Hi
If you post a picture up we should be able to identify it from the frame as different models had slightly different frame brackets and forks/brakes engine markings etc
Clocks are also a giveaway
Tapatalk is good for posting pics from a mobile
Download the app, search for rdlccrazy forum then it's a doddle
The number on the cdi is a good indicator too

No number plate. . And no log book. He said that he has been buying the bike in parts from all over apart from the engine and frame which he got off a mate. I know this whole situation makes me look stupid but I thought he was genuine. If I cant find a solution to my problem I will have to ask him to take it all back or flog off all the bits. That way I may make my money back but I`d rather do the build.

Pictures say a thousand words Whose to say he even bought the correct parts If it’s an 83 it should be a 31k Lc2 model with bikini fairing and belly pan like this Matt 🧸

I`ll have to do some investigating and take some pictures of various bits and post them for appraisal by you chaps. I`m getting slightly disheartened at the moment. There is no fairing with it or belly pan but the rest of the plastics and tank look right as that picture. I`ll have to get back on here asap. Looks like I`ll be in the garage tomorrow night. Thanks everybody for your help so far.

I’d start by checking for serial numbers on the right side of the headstock

There must be a few guys up your way. Don't get too disheartened yet. A thick powdercoat will easily cover frame numbers, so they may be there - fingers crossed. If not, then a wanted ad on here, or look on ebay for a frame. Registration will go on the frame identity so you will need it to have the numbers, and they must be clear are readable. Unfortunately, Lc's and Pv's were some of the most nicked bikes back in the day, so there will be a few dodgy ones floating about still This forum is full of Pv guys who know them inside out, so you are in the right place Dusty

Anthony Frame number as said should be on the right side of the headstock like this pic I've seen a few that are quite shallow if the blaster has been a bit too rough then the coating covers it Steve

Has the engine number been filed off? I can only imagine that this would be done for two reasons, either the engine has been stolen or its a purchased replacement that was going to be re stamped to match the frame number. If frame and engine numbers have both been removed it surely suggests its a stolen bike.. in which case you will need to re stamp the frame and motor with a number taken from a knackered donor with a V5.. all is not lost but you may have to buy two bikes to make one..

I`m in Morecambe, Lancashire. I'm in Morecambe so send me a PM and we'll see what we can do If the frame has been powder coated, its sometimes very hard to see the numbers if not impossible, without removing some coating....

Hello Anthony, you can find some informations on this excellent website (which is mine !): rd350lc.net/STORYuk.htmbut as said post pictures, it's the quickest way to check that. Cylinders, carburettors and pipes should have 31K marking on them but '85 1JF & 57V model have the same 31K marking. The CDI (if OEM part) is a good way to identify a 31K: it should be 29K-50 and 1JF/57V are 52Y-50 (it's located below the fuel tank) Xavier

Good and bad news ? I've found frame number under powder coating. Bad news is, that I didn't need to do that. Vin plate was in box of bits. More potential bad news is that it's a 250. Not sure about that. Vin plate is in German so it may be an import??? Is a 250 anywhere as near desirable as a 350. Vin is 4L1-401579. PVR number is 79/6553.Does this mean anything to anyone? I cant find any info on line. Anthony

Hi Not sure if it helps but my yellow bike rebuild used a German imported frame and engine cases that I then finished buillding using a completed UK bike with a knackered / beyond repair frame And then when finished the rebuild I got a dating cert for the German frame and then applied for a age related plated for the completed bike And here is the vin plate on the imported frame Maybe you could register the frame / bike as a German import on the nova system and then build and then apply for an age related plate with a dating certificate I have never done above but I am sure someone on the forum has done a “late” nova registration to get round an issued using a German address😉 from google maps and a inventive reciept😉 That way this may save you and get an age related registration rather than a dreaded Q plate Best wishes Al
