What, if any, sealant to use on the water pump gasket?

i never used to seal them but i always do now after my resto LC leaked like a sieve even with cleaned and faced replated cover, new gasket and cleaned up case. In the end I refaced the case and sealed it with 1194 and used bolts, not the OEM screws. Not a drop has dripped since.

I use 1104 or 1194 too. So many gasket faces on these old engines show marks and gouges from previous strip downs, so a bit of 3bond gives your gaskets an easier time. Dusty

If a genuine gasket (it has a sealant ridge on it) and both faces good I fit dry
If pattern or any pitting I use clear silicone (I get Fernox free from work 😏)

As Steve says, if genuine then dry.
However if using a paper gasket I smear it with a thin layer of grease. I don’t like the idea of sealant squashed out and entering the coolant system.

A smear of grease also helps when you come to remove the gasket. I do this on base gaskets and the clutch cover gasket too. I use Threebond on the reed block gaskets as they are the most like place for an air leak.

Used you gaskets and no leaks at all on my latest YPVS. Jon
