Got a big dilemma
Looking at parts to stash for the TR build and I am at a cross roads
My original plan was spoked wheels using the original hubs and rwu forks
I have the hubs and I have a spare set of Fazer 600 41mm rwu forks (bike was 180kg so in the ball park but would be revalved/sprung)
Was thinking adaptor plates and grimeca replica calipers to make it look period.
The Fazer yoke should fit with a little modding as the frame headstock is the same length as a ypvs and I've done that twice now
That was the plan till Dusty started putting lovely Facebook pics up π€£
Now I'm looking at GSXR 1000 k8 forks/yokes, radial calipers and an sv1000 front wheel with a dl rear wheel
Its actually cheaper to do the gsxr route
Also had the brainwave as it's a gt750 motor in an xr11 frame I could badge it as a GTXR π
Opinions please
Steve

I would personally go with your first option.
The bike would look much more period.

Do not waste this one opportunity to do something special do not follow the crowd, erm hereβs an original thought 17in mag wheels usd forks yawn oh look itβs my modern yawn interpretation of a tr750 bore, snooze oh look it looks like everyone elseβs interpretation of a modern snooze two stroke. Wire wheels with wider rims rwu decent sized forks with decent shocks on lovely swing arm on the road yummy, as above hot no f**king imagination and follow the flock, you sheep.

How close to a replica do you want it to be ? Depending on that answer, the route you take will become more obvious. Do you want a special that has the TR silhouette, and unlike any other TR rep out there ? If so, then use whatever suits you/fits cost wise/parts you already have. When I started the CafΓ© racer build I wanted it to be a bike like a Td/Tz but not a replica. I'm not overkeen on spokeys anyway, but I had RWU Rgv forks and wheels already so decided to use them, and I actually love the look of them. RWU forks do seem to suit it better than USD's though. Building a nut and bolt correct Tr replica will be more expensive than a special, and end up looking like a lot of other Tr reps. Nothing wrong with that if that's what you want but I don't reckon that's what you had in mind ?? Dusty

Ignore him above man of 3 spokes spoked wheels wider and nice anodised rims, fat rwu forks online type remote reservoir shocks, feck it hard tail and put 12 in overs that'll make you stand out. Steve you know I'm peeing about go with what you want and what makes you happy don't let any of us persuade you, you're the one that has to live with it, build it and enjoy it. If it were mine id never have started with a kettle in the first place, but im now looking at buying a metisse frame so what do i know.

I've looked at frame kits too. Always fancied building something around a Harris Tz frame kit or something like it. There is also this; www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-TZ350-NEW-CMR-LOWBOY-FRAME-TANK-SWINGARM-KIT/133204705688?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649But more than twice the price of Steve's Tr kit ! But it would make an awesome special. Cant remember which magazine - either Motorcycle Mechanics or Classic Bike, did a rebuild on a Harris Tz they had sat in a lock up. Rd400 engined, they built it and gave it away in a readers competition. I loved the look of that bike and would love to do something like it. KR1 3 spokes would look good as they are not "swept" like Tzr/Rgv etc. H section Dymags weren't "swept" either, so the Kwacker wheels may look a bit less modern than other 3 spoke designs. Dusty

At the risk of being abused by the red Tasmanian devil πΏ lurking behind his keyboard Iβd say stick with your original plan If you already had the gsxr parts laying about it would be a no brainer π€ͺ

Can always rely on you for a serious sensible answer π€£ I know what you are saying about the usd forks but I like them π Don't know if what's holding me back on the spoked wheels is the fact I'm in the middle of the retro spoked 31k hybrid so maybe thinking it's just the same I'm always the same, never can decide π Steve

Nothing wrong with that if that's what you want but I don't reckon that's what you had in mind ?? Dusty Hi Dusty It was never meant to be a TR replica. I basically wanted a street fighter version of one I was wanting a big cc 2 stroke as a project and H1/2's were out of the question so I thought the kettle would be fitting. Especially with the electric start and my dodgy legs. I may not even go the high left exhaust route as it's fine on a race bike with bellmouths but on a road bike I fear the pod filter is in the way I have the rwu forks and yokes that will fit the frame and the forks are 17mm spindle like the front hub. I already have the original wheels so hubs ain't a problem. The problems start with value. The spoked wheels will cost Β£750 to build and as I want adjustable forks I'll be another Β£500 for cartridge conversions. It has to handle well. By the time I buy retro calipers and a master cylinder there's another Β£300 Β£900 buys a gsxr front end and a set of wheels/brakes. Some may say that's only Β£600 but add that to the Β£1000 budget for pipes and the Β£1500 for the engine work it all adds up It will be a 10k build which I don't want to stand back at the end and wish I'd went the other direction If anything if I changed my mind I'd have more chance of getting my money back on the USD front Steve

Dusty I know what you mean on the wheels The sv/gsxr/dl wheels I was looking at were straight spoked for the very same reason For a while I was pondering RWU forks and Zephyr 750 wheels as they had a nod in the direction of the H section Dymags Steve

Make it look the part, make it handle, make it go like stink, use the above wheels!
Or you could not follow the crowd by "bobbing" it (with fat whitewall tyres) or even a Bosozoku rep...

I was in the same dilemma about my Rickman CR70 restoration. I couldn't decide whether to make it look period or a modern interpretation.. It's a bit easier for me as the Rickman frame kits were meant to have the best period parts of the day fitted. Not wanting the spindly wheels and dodgy brakes of the day I've decided on a GSXR Radial front end off a 750 K4 and a lightweight later GSXR front wheel with a DL1000 rear wheel and a custom swing arm. It'll hopefully look like a modern Rickman with an air-cooled Yoshi Honda engine.
Time will tell....
Reg
