You are right, it does say engine oil basically. I will need to have a look/overall my forks before it's next mot, I am wondering if I should go for a 'proper'fork oil??

oil threads are the best, no one ever seems to say the same as anyone else.
Ive used ATF, posh Silolene suff and more latterly fully synthetic engine oil 10w40 as I had some handy and figured id give it a go. Haynes says 10w30 IIRC and i think they got that from the Yam manual.

Maybe only in a laboratory type of situation, using the same rider etc.

Back in the day 10w40 engine oil is what they used to put in !! did the job i suppose on a relatively simple fork, would modern fork oil make much difference? not much i doubt !

Used 10w in refrshed forks, I wouldnt get too choosy about the brand, think mine was silkolene but id have taken any the chap had on the shelf.
As said above, the forks where shite when new and often the most complained about part of the bike in any roadtest of the day, if they havent been touched for many a year, you'll notice a difference , im sure my Micron fork brace has helped the front end as well thou!

Can’t remember much about the old straight grades of engine oil, can remember putting 20/50 in my rd200 forks, don’t think there was 10/40 or whatever then. Was very firm but never have liked much suspension movement. Even now sometimes I mix up god knows what, main thing is not to leave it in there for ever. Main thing is damping, then lubrication, then cooling.
