FWIW I built my forks out of bits. FZR250 bottoms, F2 tops, FZR springs (progressively wound, may be aftermarket?), F2 damper rods and a guess at fork oil level. They work as well as any of the pogo sticks Yamaha fitted in the 80's. Some of the bushes were an issue, but searching through Norbos stash found the right ones, sadly not bagged, so I don't know what bike they were intended for. So, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over getting exactly the right bits, if they bolt together they will be OK(ish), just like standard. I would go along with that and also add that budget, and even supposedly higher tech bikes of much younger years could still do with some tinkering. Not that I need them to be that refined, but very few bikes I buy go without at least a change to thicker oil. Worth making a note of any changes though, if only ( or mainly ) to assist any future owner.

Hi CB
With the greatest of respect the issue is I already have the original forks, stanchions, damper rod, seals and dust covers etc
All I needed was the spring, trying to find bits to do a Heinz 57 is time consuming and potentially costly, and not what I want to have as a finished product, to me there’s not much point in getting other parts from other bikes when you don’t have a starting point on what fits with what
We don’t have the large market of spares that there are in the rest of the world in Australia and I live in the most isolated capital city in the world
I’m not being pedantic, I hope, in wanting the correct part for the forks, I’m building a bike from boxes of bits and have sourced parts that I don’t have or need to be new as in engine seals and gaskets etc that fit the bike from all over the world, you’d think a simple fork spring would be fairly easy, obviously not
In this case building a bitzer is not my plan

I didn't build my forks to be anything special, they were just bits I had kicking around, a set of FZR forks with rusty stanchions and a well used set of F2 forks. I wanted the FZR wheel with huge single disk so needed the FZR bottoms.
I'm just trying to point out that your set of bits, with easily obtainable later springs for example, will almost certainly work OK. Obviously if you can source the right bits then you have piece of mind, but I wouldn't sweat it too much. YMMV.

Certainly nice to have bits kicking around, unfortunately I don’t my bits are all LC2 31K and 57V with the odd 250 barrels thrown in
I could certainly build another bike as long as it’s a F1 as I have all the spare panels cases barrels and heads etc to do either a 350 or a 250 51L, one major issue I don’t have a frame or forks yet, and I’m kicking myself I let go my spare 31K nose cone and belly pan to help get another bike on the road

Wish I had your problem, I'm falling over frames and forks here 🤣

Yes my SWHOMBO wasn’t overly impressed when I bought this one, matching numbers F1 for $250
She’s relented a bit now, but I daren’t bring in another just yet
Besides frames here are like rocking horse poo
I’ve got to put this box of bits back together first it’s been two years at least so far
It would be nice to have the problem of too many frames, if you ever feel like giving one away, Steve, and you know a person who just happens to be coming my way with a really large suitcase just let me know
