Tanks are a funny thing. Pix like that get Tank Hunters all bleary eyed and they all say 'Yes, I want one' and then most of them seem to think it should cost about 200quid, its at that point it all falls apart. Craftsman ship costs money, sadly our bikes are not worth 100k and our wallets are not fat enough for it, if only they were... But then mere mortals like us wouldnt own em. There is a Japanese company doing early yovs tanks, dunno how far along they are now (running late last time I looked) but they were almost affordable.

I would love to know what a commercially viable figure it would take to manufacture these..Surely it would be worth this chaps time if he got pre- orders based on a prototype..The demand has to be there for " x " amount...

Yep, just read around the other threads on here about tanks and you'll soon get the picture. Costs a bomb to set up and buy the MOQ, then you have to make sales to slowly get your money back and eventually make a profit. There is money to be made doing it at even sensible money, but it'll take a brave man... and the fact other people are starting to do it as well means its a worse bet than an empty marketplace and baying customers - ie like it was when the LC tanks got made. And they were for a more seminal bike etc etc
A mate of mine got some TZR tanks made in alloy. Beautiful things. Dont fit tho. He is gutted. Obvs.I'd love to modify one for an RD/RZ but i cant afford to buy one from him and pay to mod it, so that means he is stuck with boxes of them in his shed. We dont talk about them anymore when i see him. nuff said.

The alloy tank for my tr750 cost £850
10 day lead time and looks the business
It's simple enough to get an rd one made that will fit but it wont have the lip seams and will need an aero cap

Steve your tank will also have been built a few times so will be a known subject when I have enquired about an alloy tank previously for a gs they told me it would be more expensive as it was a one off. So unless you ordered sufficient numbers it would probably be more than the £850 you paid.
