Regarding small piston cutouts on the exhaust side. Only the 400C and D had those. All other Aircooled not. They didn’t really work so we’re removed ... Thank you ,,,so the pistons I have look correct?? ,Chris Yes, the pistons shown by the side of your barrels are correct for late 250AC barrels. Earlier ones has a dykes ring and different windows. C/D and E/F do however look very similar to LC 250. Generally the will be marked inside with both manufacturers and model. So your looking for 1A0, 2R8 or 4L1 if it was LC. actually just from the top shot of your barrels I can’t tell wether they are CD or EF, but easy to tell if you look at where is says 247cc. EF have 2R8 written along side.

That's interesting regards the pistons. So Chris's pistons in the pic look like standard "E" pistons ? I ask as all the ones I ever had, had smaller windows than those - more like a standard Lc rather than the larger and squarer Pv pistons. And I thought you should always source pistons designed for an aircooled bike due to different expansion rates between aircooled and water cooled ? Or was that a myth ? Been a long time since I did the windy's so it would be good to know for sure Dusty

Yes, they do look like EF to me, but they might be pattern as the windows weren’t always exactly same as ART.
Pistons.....hope that doesn’t turn into a hot potato here too, but ideally the piston profile and clearances should be finely matched to the bore size and type in question. In practice there’s plenty of wiggle room to ensure adequate matching even though there are some compromises.
On Aircooled bikes there’s very good backward compatibility, so it’s really only the purest restoration where you might sleep easier knowing you had ‘factory’ items buried deep inside the engine.

Alex, don’t think the piston debate we know about is about one person... Simply there seems to be huge misunderstanding about the very specific topics...and the two get muddled and discussed together on forums which let’s face it should carry as much sway as comments in a pub....not exactly peer reviewed publishing....but as with a pub, some folk are known by the community to be competent in certain domains, others not.
First topic is should a LC or AC piston be used in the opposite application...answer is no Second topic is could a LC or AC piston be used in the opposite application....answer is yes ( with corresponding consequences and caveats).
But the above is not so different to the Tang debate or pros and cons of running a piston and bore outside of the factory services tolerances...
Anyway, running an alloy piston in a cast iron bore is a compromise all by itself!

Looks awesome Chris Is the base of the seat metal or plastic ? Metal will give you lots of options for brackets. Dusty

Have you worked out a number plate/rear light bracket yet ? That could incorporate a rear mount for the seat, all in one, neat unit. You can get some really small rear lights now - I would keep it as small as possible on your set up to keep it clean looking. I got my rear light/stop light from Digital Speedos on the net; 20190608_133656 by dusty miller, on Flickr You can get different styles and sizes, and they are super bright. Dusty

Hi there ,, progress been slow but I'm still chipping away at it been working on fixing the seat ,been a struggle as I didn't want to bolt it down because wanted easy access underneath so I brought some seat hinge's off a rd 200 they bolt straight on under the seat so then I've made some hinge post's up and welded them on , they were a pig to get right so it sits correctly and opens but I got there ! .I brought a seat lock off a fz 600 was £7 rd LC ypvs about £20 so was happy with that I just have to fab up a plate and mount that up that's my next task 👍👍 IMG_20200206_133616 by Chris, on Flickr IMG_20200206_133623 by Chris, on Flickr IMG_20200208_183948 by Chris, on Flickr IMG_20200208_183936 by Chris, on Flickr IMG_20200205_175233 by Chris, on Flickr

Hi Chris I haven't commented much on this thread but I have been following it with great interest and loving what you have been doing. Fabrication work is exceptional and this will turn out a real special build indeed. I wish I had even half the welding skill shown in your endeavours so far. Keep up the fantastic work and she'll be rolling in the summer John

Hi ,the build had been a bit slow as despite the horrible weather I've been busy building a new man cave / workshop my plann was to build a nice big one at the bottom of the garden so I've got round to it.its 15 ft x 20 ft I'm going to insulate and board the inside so it's nice and warm can't wait to move in 😊😊 IMG_20200221_170158 by Chris, on Flickr IMG_20200224_125750 by Chris, on Flickr IMG_20200227_165513 by Chris, on Flickr

Good job Chris Should have done a shed build thread We all love a shed ! Hope it's gonna be big enough Well worth insulating. I lined mine with 18mm chipboard and sandwiched 4" insulation between that and the outer wall. It still gets cold in the winter, but if you add heat it stays warm, and is draft free. If you have a wooden floor you can insulate under there too. I lined my floor with 12mm stirling board and then overlaid with carpet tiles in one half and foam interlocking tiles in the other. Amazing what difference that makes. Dusty
