VJ23 barrels, newly coated, honing marks clearly visible. But what are those spots in the coating, what would have caused them, and would you fit the barrels to a bike as they are?

Has someone tried to hone it and took the plating off ?

It looks like heat blueing
As in when you heat steel or stainless or copper you get different colours as you temper the metal differently
Perhaps the honing made the bores overheat or they have got real hot due to a blow up
I’d get an engineer to give his thoughts

Puzzling. If it was heat colouring, it would have been removed with the honing as it would only be an oxidation. I suppose either way I would use them.

A bit of an update on the VJ23 barrels. I had them listed on ebay about six months ago, selling as newly coated and including new gaskets, seals etc .. all ready to fit. Sold to a guy in Germany, heard nothing from him for six weeks, then he messaged me regarding those marks and asked for a part refund. I refused - they were clearly visible in the photos I had used on the ebay listing. As a precaution I closed the PayPal account I used for receiving payments, after first stopping the auto-payment option on my linked bank account. He started a dispute through ebay but they refused to proceed - he had paid me direct via PayPal (though not as a friends/family payment), not through their checkout system. Several exchanges of emails followed, but I told him the barrels were fine and to use them as they were. Last week I had a letter from a debt collection agency asking me to pay them £169.05 - the overdue balance on my PayPal account. As I have heard nothing from PayPal in the intervening months I have no idea where this figure comes from, but am guessing the guy had the barrels re-coated and managed to get PayPal to refund him that amount. I am now at the 'dancing' stage with the debt collectors. I asked them to provide evidence of the debt. They have now written asking me for evidence of no debt.
I'll add more as things unfold ..

For PayPal to resolve or even try to resolve an issue they have to contact you for your side of the story
Had it with an eBay purchase that the problem went outside the timescale of the ebay protection so I turned to PayPal.
They asked for both sides of the story
I'd contact PayPal and ask what the situation is as you have heard nothing from them and the goods were purchased as described and pictured on ebay

Looks like the honing was not enough to erase the scorching marcs. Ask an engineer if an overbore is needed.

The 10% fee that they take from your shipping charges as a seller is ridiculous.

Never ever let them into your property never invite them in, if they start to walk around your property looking into windows tell them to leave your property as they are trespassing. Used to have to deal with them years ago when I was in uniform, happily t**tted most of them.
