So many people ask about this so may now have the answer
I've been offered a frame but there is no docs or background to it
I spoke to dvla and they said fill in a v62 with a covering note saying no reg number known and they will check the vin. If not on database they will advise how to register
Sounds simple but I know of someone who enquired and as they wrote the vin in the wrong format they said it was dodgy and deleted the bike and reg off the system 🤬
The other issue is that if they say it is not on the system and you then ask Suzuki for a dating letter that will probably say it was from USA or Europe you are then in the sh1t as you don't have a NOVA and they know it's more than 2 weeks
Think I've just discovered the answer.
Was pointed in the direction of a guy who if you send him £23 via PayPal he will do an hpi on the vin number. He is highly spoken of so people have had good results
If it's not on the system or you get the number wrong you still pay the £23 but if it is on the dvla he will give you the reg and history
I've paid my money but I half expect it's an import 🙄
I'll let you know how it goes

I think anyone can do their own HPI check on the VIN?
I've had mixed results with DVLA and I think it depends which person your application ends up in front of. I've had bikes I wasn't sure of registered without a murmour, and then bikes that had every single bit of paperwork you could possibly need questioned until I was tearing my hair out.
I think some people there are jobsworths and will make it difficult on purpose, where as others don't give a monkeys and just take a wage and will process stuff without any hassle. Their process and checks don't seem to be consistent - although having said that I haven't done one for a bit now, so it might have changed.

This has been sorted for a long while hasn’t it ? Effective doing the VIN check is what our own Paul Dawkins does.
The advantage of this approach is that you know exactly what’s on DVLA before you approach them. For example the last 4L0 Paul dug up for me was only on DVLA with the six index digits ( a common occurrence) or often even on there with seven when the dash is also entered as a 0.
Defo if you go to DVLA with the full ViN as on the frame but it’s on there as a abbreviated form you are in fir a pile of pain...

The hip from vin thing is a minefield
Got a dispute with one just now
They only accept 16 characters despite it not having 16
I entered the vin, they said they had details so I sent my money
Low and behold I get an email saying they have no data on it
B4st4rds 🤬
