What's happened? I'm cut off from reality at the moment and lots of internet sites don't work.

Cheers Steve. Fancy that. I hope they got security against the scumbags that think they can help themselves.

Thinking about it a couple of years ago there was also a bridge that collapsed on the two lorries. I guess building inspectors are too expensive to employ?

Where I live, near Heathrow, there are a number of large reservoirs. They have been built the same way as the one at Whaley Bridge. Victorian era design and construction - it's actually a very good and competent design. The Victorians were brilliant engineers. It's the lack of upkeep and maintainance that contributes to the failure of such structures. Same as the flooding that we have seen in recent years. Cutting costs by not dredging rivers and waterways and maintaining them leads to an increased risk. Some years back we did a visit to a tunnel that linked the King George VI reservoir, to the twin Staines Reservoirs on the opposite side of the road. We descended raking ladders into a void where there was a large cast iron pipe. We climbed onto the pipe, then in through a hatch on the top and into the pipe itself. Inside, you could stand 4 abreast and just about touch the top of it. There was a guy in there sand blasting the walls and testing the integrity of the pipe. We were taken to the end of the compartment we were in where there was a very large "door". It had a small viewing port, and through that you could see another "door", a couple of foot away. On the other side of that door there was three and a half million gallons of water ! Likewise, at the opposite end of the compartment we were in, the same "doors" held back over 4 million gallons of water from the other reservoir! The pipe and it's design is all Victorian era engineering, with rivets the size of your fist ! And it was dry ! No leaks, no seepage of water, and we spent 20 minutes in there perfectly safe ! It's a bit like an old two stroke ! Well maintained and looked after, they will give years of good service. Neglect them at you peril !! Dusty

I've worked in similar places dusty, You are quite right about the maintenance aspect. Have you noticed just how much shrubbery (some getting on to be trees) is growing out of bridges on the rail network? The builders of these would be horrified and disgusted no doubt.... It speaks volumes about the quality of maintenance they are subjected to......

Have you noticed just how much shrubbery (some getting on to be trees) is growing out of bridges on the rail network? A friend of mine has just bought a pub and gone through the change of use so he and his family can live in it as a house. The garden backs on to the main Leeds - London rail line and the trees along the embankment are a fair size but nothing compared to those growing out of a bridge parapet thirty yards away. It's a wonder the bridge hasn't collapsed already but give it a year or two ..
