I’ve got an old 20l jerrycan I’ve stored the old petrol I’ve drained from tanks until I can get rid of it ,and it’s rotted through and now leaking so I’ve had decant it into plastic containers,I still can’t find anywhere legal to get rid of the petrol Makes great weed killer stusco 👍🏻 Might try that I’ve got plenty weeds at the moment

I pour all my fluids into one large container. This includes old coolant and lots of different oils. The mixture of different fluids is used to start fires when I'm burning lots of garden weeds etc.

I’ve taken the lids off maybe a quarter has evaporated in two weeks I got rid of 3 litres the other day Mixed it into 2 litres of waste oil and poured it in the recycling drum at the dump. As said it will evaporate off Surface area is key A drum with the lid off will evaporate but pouring it into an old baking tray should speed things up. Steve

It's the first time I've had to deal with 'spare' petrol - previously the kids all had motocross bikes or road bikes for college/work/etc and they were always glad of a bit of free petrol when I drained the bikes down, but they're off doing their own thing now so don't need it and my Defender is diesel so I can't use it.
I wonder what happens if you store it in a completely airtight container, with no opportunity for moisture to contaminate it?

Well don’t store it in a steel jerrycan as it rust through after a couple of years that’s why I have a problem

What I usually do is drain it into 5l cans then top up fresh fuel with a few litres at a time
Always check the last litre for water before adding
The stuff I've been "disposing" of looks like orange squash so all cloudy

I wonder what happens if you store it in a completely airtight container, with no opportunity for moisture to contaminate it? That is my post E0 approach at the moment. I drain the tank in 5L cans. They are absolutely vapor thight. Then open the carb drains. Then 3 spoons of jasoFD oil and 3 spoons of E5 in the tank and shake it shake shake shake it. 😎 Thinking about it, i can open the tap and fill the carbs with 50% oilmix. Or leave the carbs dry until spring. 🤔

Morning men. I thought i would add more to this. I bought one of those Ethanil removal kits to see what content of ethanol was in the Esso Synergy Supreme fuel local to me that I always use as it was supposedly ethanol free but now the pumps are marked E5. I followed the instructions to the letter, added 2 ltrs of water then the fuel in 3 stages shaking well in between. When it came to draining off the separated fuel/ethanol into the measuring bottle i had LESS water than i started with So where did that water go? Guessing i now have a bit of water in the ethanol free fuel

Guessing i now have a bit of water in the ethanol free fuel Petrol does not mix with water Ethanol does If some water has dissapeared it will be in the ethanol That's where the problem lies Ethanol absorbs water from the moisture in the air hence why modern vehicles with sealed systems have less problems When the fuel goes off the ethanol and water splits dumping the water at the bottom of the tank causing corrosion Steve

evening chaps Just a small update. I re did the procedure today. This time i propped the back of the container up as i discovered some of the water/ethanol mix was staying in the container as it was below the outlet. Drained it all off until first bit of petrol came out and this was the result So my local Esso garage even though the pump for Synergy Supreme is marked E5 has 0% Ethanol in it

Before filling the tanks of my 2 strokes this winter I tested the Esso Supreme fuel from my local garage in NW London, no ethanol here either, happy days 👍

A friend who works for Shell (albeit in the IT department) told me that the percentage on the pump E5, E10 etc, is the MAXIMUM content in that delivery and may range from 0% to 5%, must be some sort of E.U. Legal requirement.

Interesting stuff, and potentially a worry for us classic vehicle folk. But I’ll be honest, I have been running classic bikes for years, I don't do many miles on each one and they spend plenty of time sat in my cold garage with “old” fuel in there. I always intend to put a bit of 2t oil in the tanks before I store them for winter but I never get round to it... I only ever use premium fuel, mainly BP or Shell and I never have any problems with rust or split hoses...nothing.

Only just cottoned on to the fact it’s put in diesel also, I know they have a filter for any water but still not good. Going back to petrol for our next car, diesels don’t like being driven gently for too long anyway.
