When i get round to changing the oil on the 31k project i recently bought, is it worth putting progressive springs or the YSS fork valve kit in?
Baring in mind ive never ridden the bike so no real idea what the forks are like as standard....

I would say any upgrade is worthwhile I have done so on my 31k forks, quite a few threads about this. The forks are very basic as standard and limited by stanchion size, front axle size etc etc so they are never going to be brilliant. It all comes down to personal choice.

Ok there will probably be a post from an overseas forum member who will ridicule your decision. Just ignore him.

That person generally recommends cutting off the first four coils of the standard springs and replacing with a spacer to take up the slack . Usually states standard ypvs springs too soft. I bought a drop in valve emulator from Mike's xs650. 35 mm. Haven't fitted them yet of course.
I'm putting f2 forks in of so I can use the triumph twin pot calipers. Have to deal with excess form
length so these type of posts get my attention.

Not got a problem with cutting springs but how do you get the end flat without a oxy torch...

Hi If your forks have never been apart, new springs, oil and seals will make a huge difference over the shagged parts that are in there now. As Yogi says, they are "of their time" and never gonna be cutting edge, but you can certainly improve them with better springs etc. And I was under the impression you could fit Lc2 stanchions to F2 sliders, so keeping Lc2 length but gaining F2 lowers for better brakes without resorting to NK style caliper brackets. Think it was OEB that's mentioned that before, although I could be wrong ! Dusty

I know that it bucks the trend here but I'm going to offer a different opinion.. Well set up and maintained standard forks are generally not too bad.
New sliders, seals and the right spring, oil weight and air gap can make a shagged out set feel amazing. The devil is in the detail... Most of the time, changing to very modern forks can just highlight weakness in the rest of the chassis design.
I raced SV650's for a while and a well set up front end on those, although very basic indeed, would run rings around much more modern stuff.
Just 2p

I don’t disagree Reggie just depends on your perspective if you are used to modern decent big piston forks etc etc they will always feel compromised in comparison I have completely rebuilt my forks using all of the above to at least get the best out of what I have. They also don’t ever dive under braking. Dusty it’s veg not yogi 😁

I must admit I was surprised riding my F1 with Triumph calipers and forks rebuilt with new everything, for the first time last week.
With a wilber's rear shock too, it handled well, even on bumpy roads. Not too much dive either, which I was expecting. Plenty for this type of bike for me.

Dusty I've actually got a set of the later forks off the rz250 I originally bought but with this 31k being a pretty good matching number bike, I'd rather keep the original legs, I'll rip into them and see What the internals are like.... I've got a R6 shock kicking about that I might use. There's a noxo shock in it now !!

Dusty , I think you are correct , I remember that option being mentioned when I was first on about F2 forks in the LC.
