Has anyone successfully got a Q plate on a bike changed to an age related plate. The reason I ask is I have just bought a kawasaki from a mate that is Q plated, it has not been on the road since 1996, I am going to apply for a v5 using the frame number as I have told Swansea that I bought the bike without any paperwork, the guidelines say that a Q plate is issued to a vehicle that you cant determine the age, I know that the bike is a 1980 by the frame number and I believe it was Q plated in 1985 because the engine was damaged beyond repair much the same as a newer bike now would be classed as a cat C or D but now still retains its original reg. I am hoping that they cant find any trace of the plate and tell me to re- register the bike when I get it mot'ed I would be grateful to hear if anyone has had any success with this.

If they have a record, you cant, you will need to re frame it.
If they don't have a record, get a dating letter and register it.

It always used to be the case that once a frame got a "Q" plate, that was the end of it. I seem to remember in more recent years a discussion where someone got a "Q" back to a proper registration number. I had an Rd400 back in the 80's that was a "Q" reg. It had been a Brands Hatch race school bike, and not road registered when new. Once sold on, it was registered with the dreaded "Q", which was about as popular as a French kiss at a family reunion !! I tried several times to get a proper reg, without success , but that was a lot of years ago now. Google may help you here. Dusty

is the frame number registered to the q plate ?? The frame number is registered to the Q plate but it hasnt been taxed since 1996 so Im hoping DVLA may have lost it during there computer upgrades they seem to be good at that.

You really will fall on deaf ears with the DVLA.
You'll also struggle to get a dating letter from Kawa UK, without the matching range engine number.
