Hi everyone, Could do with a bit of help with this,Ive managed to get into my speedo and found an uncoiled spring which is on the speedo needle holder-between the clock numbers when the speedo went down it was stuck around 60mph,snapped the needle etc and has left this sorry state..
Is this part at all repairable?..of is it F****!..when a screw driver is inserted in the cable section the round disk spins but none of the cogs etc are turning..is there any way to test what I have or are any internal parts available or inter changeable with other models?..cant seen find the XT500 needles at present.
My options are 1:repair:pro repair(Peter Bond is around £270,just for the speedo! 2:Ebay a second hand set around £200 but they are mostly kpm. 3:Any for sale on here or any guys know of a good guage repair shop?
As usual, thanks for any responses, its really appreciated.

Sounds fckd to me. Had one similar and wasn't able to get it economically repaired so bought a s/h replacement.

Yep fecked
The cable drives the round magnet that the domed bit sits over
The dome is connected the the needle with the spring providing tension
As the magnet spins the magnetic force turns the needle against the spring
The faster it spins the more force so the more the needle rotates
Problem happens when the dome comes loose on the shaft, makes contact with the spinning disc and spins the needle shaft destroying the spring.
Buy a km Speedo and a new face from Simon wells ( he will fit them for you for a fee )
Take the 2 long shaft gears out the broken mph Speedo and fit them in the km one and you have a Speedo that reads in mph and distance in miles.
If you haven't noticed the 60mph and the 100kph are in the same place so really for all purposes the same unit
Only the dial and the gearing driving the odometer are different

Thanks Midlife & Shaune, Yes the Dome is moving forward toward the front by about 1/4 cm,the spring in front of this is shredded...im assuming its now scrap? Just seen a few clock sets of flea bay..im slightly wary that I end up with a similar set of problems but like most things its pot luck I suppose. Thanks again for the advice.

I do wonder if anyone actually uses Peter Bond's services? I probably would have the other year but his pricing seems a bit of a joke to be honest.

Good question earthman,i spoke to him and said the clocks would need a refurb which he said was £190(each),as soon as I mentioned the needle was stuck & broken that went up to £270,thats before even seeing them & add on recorded delivery etc...

Sounds familiar,....makes me think that he doesn't really want to work on these LC clocks at least or maybe he can't actually get the parts for them?? If he can, what a waste of his skills etc.

Are there any gauges that may use the same parts or are unique to LCs?

Are there any gauges that may use the same parts or are unique to LCs? I was wondering the same thing risolc?, maybe aircooled 250/400 or XS 250/400 may be close?.

There are a few, but they are hard to get now. XS 650 is a good one.

I thought id update this if anyone else has similar speedo issues or gets bouncing needles etc. I managed to get the speedo apart and have a good look inside and found the spring is stretched and there's wear on the rear cog but the front cogs etc seem ok. Peter Bond went through the options and said they can repair but it would be more cost effective to source a good used set and then get those properly serviced. He was pretty good about going through the pros and cons of renovating/keeping these things going. I now have a want add in for an LC MPH speedo or clock set if anyone has any for sale!?
