Hi There, Just bought a nice condition original 81 Canadian Import with 10K Kilometers on it. It runs but a bit roughly as in the last 6 years it has just been started occasionally. Any advise as to what to do to get her running regularly on the road again. I was thinking all fluid changes, going through the carbs but keeping the jets etc as Ive read here most carb kits are crap. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks

Send the carbs to Dave (Mutts Nuts) and have the brass balls removed and full clean. It will save you messing about wondering if you have problems with your carbs. Get a leak down test kit and see if the top end holds pressure.

If you're not an expert (and I reckon most of us aren't) then you would really benefit from having someone put it on a dyno and set it up properly. I can also recommend Muttsnuts, I know my way around these bikes reasonably well but he's an expert and he'll have it running bob-on - it's worth spending the money to get someone who really knows what they're doing to set it up properly, once that's been done you should get years of use out of it with just a bit of regular maintenance.

But what if he's in Canada 🤣
Post not too bad probably
Carbs will need cleaned including removing the emulsion tubes and drilling out the brass balls
Other thing I'd want to do as a minimum is a pressure test on the crank seals and check the hi/lo speed windings with a test meter.
Ideally pull the motor down, check crank, pistons and rings before replacing all the oil seals
Sounds drastic but a failing seal can destroy the engine
Years ago I could work out why an honda mt50 would run crap after a few minutes riding
Had it in bits many times before I realised the piston rings were gummed up and would stick in the grooves once warmed up
Hopefully with only 10k's on it you would just be gaskets, seals and a clean

There are some real geniuses on this forum (Mutt Nuts being up there) and lucky for us 1) they are free and open with their advice and 2) the 4L0 engine is novice user friendly with their effective guidance.....no matter where you live in the world. IF you have the time and a little bit of cash I highly recommend just simply going in there rebuilding the engine from the ground up (sending the carbs to Mutts and the oil pump to Arrow for refurbing) and that will solve everything. I'm an idiot and I just recently managed to finish my 82 Canadian import- the bike runs like a dream. Dusty350's thread here that will see you right in achieving this rdlccrazy.proboards.com/thread/34544/rd350lc-engine-rebuildIf you have patience and you dry run every task two or three times first....you'll be a winner.

Hi Thanks I am an ex-pat living in the US. The bike starts up, sounds great revs right through but it is very lumpy/stalls at idle. The bike is original and imo mint. I like the idea of sending the carbs off to (Mutts) and getting the oil pump checked and doing a leak down check. Electrics checking I will do as well. Changing all fluids I will do as a matter of course. It would be a shame to take the engine apart if I didn't need to as the bike hasn't had a spanner on it looks like! Will provide a few pics later. I have 75% off with FedEx through the Company I work for so I can send stuff to the UK no probs. I'll look for their contacts on here later. Thanks again and keep them coming as I'm not familiar with RD's

OK got her home today. Lovely original condition 10K Kilometers. What the seller didn't tell me was that it came with mint original Canadian build/comment sheet, warranty and owners manuals and untouched toolkit. Sounds so crisp and tight with the choke on but stalls when choke is off. I am over the moon with it! Didn't think I'd find one in the US let alone FL!

10K ?? really !? Are You THAT naive?? Typically Crap resells are at the 30K onna Odo mark ... An 'industry standard"

Yes I'm really that naive. I also have a 1975 Kawasaki KH250 A5 with just over 2K miles on it. Sometimes there is a little thing called DD. Something of which you obviously never do and are totally unaware of.

I was watching that bike! It went up to stupid money at one point but congratulations. They are so rare in the US you are lucky to have it- no-one knows what they are. You could send the carbs to MuttsNutts and be guaranteed a great service- you really should send your oil pump to Arrow...he welcomed you on here....I think that's a necessity...however you could try the carbs yourself by getting a half decent ultrasonic cleaner. I bet it'll run much better. Here's a thread of me cleaning my first LC (in modern times) carbs
Don't pay attention Bare- he just doesn't believe in miracles. Fair enough.

Hi there, Thanks for the advise. First things I will be doing is sending the Carbs and Oil pump off to MuttsNuts and Arrow. The rest is just standard checking/cleaning and getting her running sweet again. Went to see it after the auction ended expecting to walk away from it but the condition of it and the documentation/story with it was so impressive I did a deal on it. This is no miracle just a low mileage bike with story and Docs to back it up.....so I understand Bares skepticism !

That's a great looking Lc you've got Quite a find too. And the Kwak looks mint Pay no attention to Bare. He is snowed in for 11 and a half months of the year and doesn't get any sunlight !! Enjoy your bike and I'm sure you'll get it running right. Dusty

Hi Trent, welcome in. I seem to recognise the username from the KTC, did you build a NOS S1c a few years ago? Mick Hi Mick, Yes I did, Wow that was a few years back now seems like a life time ago. Getting a few bikes together and running to enjoy the fun factor when I want. I have 2 restorations partially complete to keep me busy for the long term.

im sure that some bikes are clocked... but there are some very low mile examples of most vehicles around. mate of mine has a 2001 gixer 600 owned from new and only 3k on the bike.. been "sat" for the last 16 years.
Trent, nice LC btw...

I dont think that the miles or Kms on a 35 treat old bike makes any difference in price unless it's zero miles. Other things like matching numbers, UK bike, originality, condition and amount of rework etc makes the price difference. We seem to buy and sell the locks quite often so you can never be sure of miles on an old bike unless you know all its history. I actually bought a bike with only 8k miles on the clock but swapped the clocks with a set that had 24k as that seemed more realistic. Reverse clocking! Lol
