As some of you know, I am trying to build a track bike.
I am thinking of using a chain with a removable link. My thinking is that it will make maintenance and changing sprockets easier.
Is this a big no no?
Can i have some views and opinions please

I've used split links for the last 35 years, on bikes up to a 1200 bandit, never had an issue. You'll be keeping a close eye on it, after each race etc, I imagine, I'd be happy to use a split link.
I'm sure others will disagree.

Split for me
Never had a problem but then never do many miles lol
Got 2 for my TSX to allow the extra section for off road to be removed when on road gearing
Maintenance is the thing. Keep lubed and if you are really paranoid fit a new split link every time you split it

I raced a CR500 supermoto with approx 60hp with a split link, never had a problem, but I always used quality chains from B&C. Had an RGV250 with an Oring chain and snapped it! It was on the bike when I bought it and was probably a badly maintained cheapo chain.

Maybe if the chain link is coloured differently it would be easier to check.

Maybe if the chain link is coloured differently it would be easier to check. My splint link is gold, easy to spot.

Watched scrutineers at the MGP changing links to rivet type to comply with the regs. Whether they do now, I know not. Never had an issue with a split link...but have seen ones that have failed.... OEM bikes used to have solid chains fitted from new...well 3 Hondas of mine did. No 4 did!

Thanks for all the opinions and advice. I am surprised how many people are using split links. All my chains are rivited.
I will use a split link and make sure the link is very visible for easier checks, plus if it sticks out like a sore thumb it will remind me to check it.

Just out of curiosity what are your reasons for using a split link?

The main reason I have a split link on my LC hybrid is the loop for the lower suspension mount.
If it were riveted it would be permanently fixed through the swingarm.
I’m considering using a rivet on my standard YPVS swingarm?
I too have never had a split link fail, but know others that have.

I always took a spare split link racing and only ever used the spring clip once.

Just out of curiosity what are your reasons for using a split link? 1 - I don't have a chain rivet tool 2 - it's easier 3 - it comes with a split link Steve

Rivet for me.. Revetting tool was cheap.
We've all seen the damage a chain can do to crankcases......

Both link types work Fine. Hell Automobiles often have a split link But.. Many Eff up fitting the split links and Even More do a piss poor job of riveting a link. And it's every bit as important maybe more so to do it Very well on a rivet link. Regina sells a Quality Tool for link riveting. But it isn't Cheap. When all is said 'n done ...Our Yamas ain't exactly powerhouses likely to break links.. more likely to have them fall off than anything else.

What did you use in your racing days Bare? or should i ask what is your preference? Yam supplied Split links on our/their Tz350s and 700's. Never had a problem. Race machinery received meticulous constant attentions though. Nothing was ever left to chance. However there weren't riveted links in early 70's either. Again: I don't have preference as BOTH types require competent installation. Wellll maybe I do on second thought.... as I didn't want to pay ~200$ for a Regina Rivet tool... and use it maybe 3 times. So I use split types on my DID chains

As Bare has said above, either type can fail if badly fitted. For my own personal experience, I've seen more failures from links than riveted, including a bike where I was lubing the chain after a ride while it was still warm and when spinning the wheel, noticed that the split link had gone completely... That put the fear of god into me..

I'm going to go for the split link. The bike won't rack up many miles and it will constantly be checked and i will make sure the split link stands out.
Thanks for everyones input
