After reading PS with Mark's LC in it I kept on looking at that SS50 and how cheap it was to build...but even a knackered SS is way out of my budget, one is on the A/C forum at £499. Then I saw this...again... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-RD50/202292351026?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2748.l2649I think the first time he listed it he asked for £500? And I was a bit dubious as the write up was total bollocks, the last time it was taxed was 1989! And his feedback is 61%. But he is 3.5 miles away so I made a bid of £40, he comes back with £45, done. Went over today for a look and the bike is as bad as it looks but salvageable and to my surprise he was a nice bloke too. Turns out funds-for-her bought something off him and then kept on doing it, not paying but leaving awful feedback. What a spanner he is. So the plan is... Modern front and rear end with extended swinger, custom seat and tank from summat...brace the frame and fit a bigger engine hopefully a small LC one or maybe even a new pitbike one as the chap with the SS did. Going to try and do the lot for under a grand, a big ask I know and it will take a long time. Picking it up tomorrow evening thanks to Dusty and his handy van, I did try to get it in my truck but it wouldn't fit . Any ideas about what parts fit etc are most welcome lads (and lasses), I will need help with this! Alex

That looks a bargain at £45. It would be worth far more if a previous owner had been a member of the Staines Massive

LMFAO. For £45 it's the bargain of the century. Needs a bit of a polish though...

Dusty and I picked it up tonight (thanks matey, was very kind of you). Closer inspection and there's more there than I thought. Genuine master cylinder, clock protector bars, both brakes, wheels, mudguards, a very rusty seat but the frame isn't, rear wheel was locked solid but by the time we got to my place it had freed up. No idea how lol. So tomorrow is tear it down day, lots of WD and probably heat too, do some measurements and try and work out what will fit. Forks, swinger and engine...maybe an 80LC one, or a 125?

I've always liked the small RD's they have a big bike look about them, with very clean lines. You've plenty of wheels to choose from, looking at the pics

What bigger engines fit? Could be a real street sleeper. I will finally get those carbs posted this week alex

Hi Alex, wonder if an rxs100 motor would fit?, maybe easier to source than an 80lc nowadays?. They’re nippy too, I had one for commuting to work years ago - good fun!.
Also it looks like you have a 50mx frame with RD50M wheels, they may be more desirable, who knows?.
A good find my man 😁 👍🏻.

Thanks everyone. Yes I thought about an RS100 or 125 lump. My first 'proper' bike was an RS100, loved it and a zippy little motor too. First thing on the agenda is restore and sell the parts I don't intend to use then do a hunt for the stuff I do want! I'd like to keep it as a sleeper really, so the engine has to have just a single exhaust, tyres and wheels will be a bit fatter. And the forks... been looking at Aprilia RS50 USD ones...cheap too!
Alex
ps thanks Veg!!

I had an earlier one, the RD50M. I was trying to shove a RS125 or RXS100 motor into it, looked like it would fit. Then I just bought an RXS100 as I turned 17. Tuned the 5hit out of it, and it went like the clappers....until I parked it up the front of a car coming in the opposite direction. Ouch.

Looks like the previous owner got their money’s worth out of that rear sprocket mate 🤣, waiting for someone to post ‘just turn it round, it’ll be fine’ or ‘I’ve run worse’ etc etc 🤗

Seen 2 engines on eBay. An RS100 that needs a rebore for £140 and an 80LC one that runs (youtube vid to support this) for over £200! Neither have carbs and the postage is obscene, like maybe double what a courier would charge. Whilst I'd like to use an LC lump for the added kudos the RS one appeals more to me. Easy to tune too, Harpowa reeds and a Micron was popular back in the day. So I will keep on searching, hopefully a good engine will turn up eventually!

Alex Maybe you should consider other manufacturers rather than just Yamaha? And don't forget trail bike engines too .. plenty of power as long as you can get the exhaust fitment sorted out www.ebay.co.uk/itm/kawasaki-ke125-engine/183199504893?hash=item2aa78a99fd:g:2mkAAOSwFFZa43mM

Alex, I've been very busy and just noticed this thread. I have an air cooled 50cc (TY I think), and an rd125lc engine kicking about somewhere. Let me know if they are any use to you mate
Cheers, Mark

Markhoopy yes I know I can use other engines (a Chinese 200cc diesel pitbike is only £200 new) but I want a 2 stroke and I really want to keep it as Yamaha as possible!

LMAO. I actually think a 350LC lump would fit (with tweaking). A big thumper though does appeal. However it would look nothing like a 'lil moped and that's the part I want to keep on this build. Bloody good idea though Rob.

IMO an RD125LC engine is about as far as I’d go.
Any more and I think it will be a handful for the frame.

Alex Alex, Did you see the fs1e with the 350lc engine?, it was for sale on eBay last year & there was a thread started on this forum?, looked insane, but as Jon say’s I’m not sure the chassis would be up to it!. Good luck whatever you decide on!. bezzer

I did see that! As Lemmy would have said...'Overkill' . Been on the blower with Mark and a 125 lump may well be going in. Tonight I saw this... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-RD-1984-project/163024985404?hash=item25f50bdd3c:g:pFUAAOSwARtam-pwMine cost a tenth of that lol. And a UK bike to boot. Now been looking at Mito 125 forks and swing arm, mainly as I have a pair of wheels and tyres already. Surprised at the prices. Forks, £30 etc so that may well be on the cards. Think the little RD frame will get some bracing here and there though! Alex

My first ever bike was a Rd50m ,I crashed it often ,destroyed the engine and finally wrote it off on a corner outside a farm on my way home from a party with my mate on the back. Performance bikes even did an article on tuning them back in the day. Been thinking about a trip to Germany to pick one up.

I've never owned a Yamaha 50, did have a go on a mate's fizzy, now that was quick, 50mph. He got a monday bike I think. After another chat with Mark an 80cc engine is going to be used, so outwardly it will look like an RD50 but with more oomph. She'll need a trick exhaust too so I'm on the look out... So today was examine the rusty parts that have been sitting in a bucket of vinegar for about a week. This is what the sprocket looked like... www.aircooledrdclub.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=56733.0;attach=79427;imageRinse under the tap and... www.aircooledrdclub.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=56733.0;attach=79429;imageWhat a difference! Bit of a sand down and paint and that will be fine. The wheels are sans tyres now and are at the shot blasters. Then the front caliper joined in the 'I'm not budging' game but swearing and brute force won the day. www.aircooledrdclub.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=56733.0;attach=79431;imageI am having a problem with the rear shock pins, heat, WD, heat, foul language. Then do I go for the standard tank and seat or something a bit more 'custom'? And she'll go GI Jane, no side panels, run on premix...or a little oil tank under the seat maybe...decisions decisions lol. Alex
