www.howmanyleft.co.ukThink this site is better on cars as the bike figures seem a bit low. good site for wasting half an hour or so though!

I wanted a 250 when I was 17 but the price was way beyond my means and I guess I wasn't alone the older lads with better jobs all had 350,s Air-cooled were affordable,I feel kind of bad about it now but I personally killed 2 RD 200s they were almost worthless at the time.Happy days

back in the late 70`s when there were loads of us riding 250`s. very few from the people i knew bought new bikes. we just bought second hand, most of us could`nt get finance unless our parents would sign the forms. as a matter of fact there was only 1 guy that had a brand new 250lc. he also had a brand new rd250e (his parents were well off). for us it was mainly rd`s, kh`s, gt`s and x7`s. once we passed our tests there were plenty of 350 lc`s around.

One reason the 250s disappeared was due to the number with L plates shoved into railings walls and trees.. There should be a parallel thread to this one, What proportion of RD riders survived ...... i only did just.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, circa £1000 for a new learner bike was a lot of money, as was commented in the roadtests/articles of the time, apart from one of my friends, no one I knew bought a spankers new bike as a teenager. No doubt the LC must be the most popular classic bike nowadays as there is always 2 or 3 at most meet ups and with all the imports coming over, there must be a decent amount on the roads, wouldnt like to guess how many thou.

how many people on here killed one? I killed a 250 DX (seized solid), parked it up at the back of a mates garage and just left it. No idea what happened to that bike. Then completely trashed my 350LC, bought new in Dec '81 then written off in June '82 with 1700 miles on the clock. Low and behold a few weeks ago the owner of the LC contacted me after I posted on here asking about it. God knows how it was put back on the road as it had been run over by a mini and was completely f#ucked and I got paid out in full by Norwich Union!

Might have been rebirthed into the one the guy has now instead of repaired. Happened so much back then, Autotrader was full of V5 docs for sale...

I was at a meet a few years back and sent some pics of the day to a friend of mine, who picked out his now immaculate and fully restored but previously front ended and written off bike sitting pretty among the bikes parked up. Back in the 80s, I don't know anyone who didnt crash their LCs at least twice...if some of these now pampered bikes could speak, the current owners would cry I bet, I include myself in that!

It's nice to read these stories but things have not changed that much. Even today get a young lad on one of these bikes and sparks will fly. I let a young lad use one of my Lc's and i have done a fair few repairs to the thing. After he has been riding it for a few days i can always re-adjust the clutch cable hmmm. Luckily he's a bit of a fair weather biker.
LC + Young Lad = WHEELIES and TROUBLE
