Ok I know this has been asked before and I've followed the links and basically gone round and round and disappearing where the sun don't shine. I have had the tank sorted and the plastics repaired and am on the point of having the painting done. I have a painter but I have no help to give him regarding colours. People have had original panels scanned and have come out with varying colours as even a NOS will have been affected by age. I have seen the Yamaha paint codes but they dont mean anything to the modern reference books. My tank has been blasted prior to welding and it was hand painted white anyway and none of the bodywork has original paint. The painter can reasonably match the white on the bodywork if necessary I guess. Is the red on the RD tank decal (Nobo's) good enough to match to? As no one seems to be riding around with NOS bodywork will mine ever look wrong? Anal......maybe just a whiff

Yes, the Yamaha codes, as I said, bear no resemblance to codes used now unfortunately.

Just buy the correct paint from rs bike paints.
I take it that it's an n1
Best ordering by phone to make sure you get solvent based and not the water based
The decal red should be near enough, some use Ford diamond white which is near if your painter wants to use his usual suplier
I use urki 900 (straight white off the mixing station) on my builds as don't care if someone tells me it's not right.

AFAIK Ford did different diamond whites over the years... or at least they did here It always amazes me that when people ask this people point the OP at Xaviers page with the useless Yamaha codes, you can tell theyve never tried to get something painted using them lol. Ive asked Xavier to add the best of what weve found so far on the various forums for close to OEM for the main colours, panatone or mixes etc. Its not an exact science tho so maybe thats holding him up.

I would be cautious with RS Bike paints, I ordered some touch up paints from them last November, the white was close enough but the red was miles out to both mine and to double check, my neighbours original Yam panels, to be fair to RS, they did refund me the cost of the red no quibble and offered to match the panel but I couldnt be bothered to travel down to St Albans again.

Thanks for the answers guys, I am tending on the two ford colours as they will be easy to source and repeatable should I need to. Just another question then, does the Norbo red match the ford reasonably? I have bought his decal kit but with the colour side in I will only know when it goes on. Although thinking about it the red is on the front mudguard and the nearest re will be on the tank which as long as the colour is near the they are far enough apart to stand a little difference I guess.

I restored a mate's TZR plastics not long ago. The Ford Radiant Red matched the decals pretty much exactly. However the decals were bought on eBay.

Thanks Alex, I think I will go for the two Ford colours. After all I am unlikely to park it next to an original, unless I go to Glasgow and then I can just claim Steve's paint must have suffered ultraviolet damage LOL

Its good to hear dream machine can match something anyway... oooohhhh, harsh! In all fairness I only used them as I got a huge discount through my work and I was prepared for disappointment but the results were flawless, absolutely perfect. I would post pics but buggered if I can work out how to do it any more.

Harsh...but fair...compare something that Mark Cordwell has done or an original panel to Dream Machine. The gold striping on my Mars Bar job was miles out, the red was almost pinky ..
Mark also checks tanks for rust and rot band treats it before painting, dream machine would paint a cheese grater without blinking if you sent it to them.
The short, sweet feeling of cheap price soon disappears when the bitterness of a poor job becomes apparent, not a fan you could say but they must get some of it right...depends on the painter on the day I would imagine.

Any idea what the RAL code is for red, I assume the frame is the same red? I need to have my frame powder coated but they want to know the RAL code.

Here are a few codes for brand name paints available at paint and auto body shops for clean white. PPG - 4576 Sherwin Williams - 58085 Matrix - 4471 Colour Right - 5528 RS Paints - 1732, or 01707273219 I am defanatley a firm believer in using local auto body supply whole sale companies . Fresh mixed paints are much more reliable. Cheers Rob

Peter, ReadingĀ www.rd350lc.net/pageCOLORcode.htm states the N1 colours are Stormy Red and 'Clean White' not Silky White? Maybe it was my 500 I was thinking of but I thought the UK 350 and 500 were the same colours? It was a long time ago but I had the 350 tank re painted after an incident with a van and those colour names still stick in my mind. I will try to find out.
