My guess is that the majority are opportunist, hence if a bike can be seen by the scally they may fancy their chances. Bikes taken from locked garages are probably targeted thefts by people after a particular model.

I agree with garage thefts being model specific, I had my KTM640 supermoto stolen out of my garage from my old house, KTM had 3 sturdy chains going through 2 ground anchors and went walkies, however the RSV mille and Hornet 600 next to it with only cheap cast disc locks on were left! The little scrotes also had the cheek to come back 6 months later and break in again (by climbing over the roof and breaking in through the garden entrance as I'd secured the front!) to see what I'd bought as a replacement! This is quite common practice according to the police!

Bikes taken from locked garages are probably targeted thefts by people after a particular model. ..which is shown another way in the figures, only 25% of the bikes stolen where over 500cc, the vast majority being smaller cc bikes which typically are less cared for and left in more risky places, for longer periods of time, often without security. Figures are still very low Vs London which had around 15,000 mopeds stolen in just 2017! Just read on another forum, some London bikers with clean records are struggling to get insurance at all now...terrible situation..

The problem is that were all paying higher premiums because of the rising thefts....

The problem is that were all paying higher premiums because of the rising thefts.... I think that's because our police force don't see it as a criminal offence anymore and leave it to your House/Bike insurance to sort out in the vast majority of cases. As someone on here said if you tell the police someone is in your house they'll pop round in a day or two to see what happened but if you say I have a gun.. they'll be there in minutes. Its a shame to see how times have changed the Police force, and I know they say its a question of resources and blame funding etc but they can still mount an 8 officer team and block roads to catch people not wearing seat belts!

what are the chances that those that are never found ended up on ebay as parts :/ In MY part of the world stolen Bikes Often end up as Racers (or parts of). So much so that when the gendarmerie let it be known that they intended to "search" an Upcoming Race event. The resultant indignation/bleating was Soooo loud that the 'search' was finally called off. Can't even begin to make this stuff up.

A friend of mine had his Ducati 851 stolen out of his garage a few years back. The 888 / 851 community is a tight one and just about everyone knows everyone else. Now that bike was special it had bespoke Spondon yokes 955 engine carbon tank you get the picture stuff you would recognise immediately if you had built it. He sold a couple of things on eBay and back then the sellers address came up for the buyer. They came in broad daylight and did his garage using his grinder to cut the chains etc. They stole his mountain bike and a long of spares as well. Nothing has ever turned up not one thing and it’s sickening to think that the person who has that bike or parts of it is probably part of the community that you think of as good blokes. Some people just don’t care where stuff is from as long as they get what they want.

unfortunately this is the state of the world we live in, I had a problem a whiole back where "parts" kept going missing, more annoylingly it was from customers bikes that where stripped waiting repair etc, me being me, every bike gets its own box, so I know what I have stripped off and what it belongs to, so it took a while to twig things I'd thought I'd misplaced where in factnicked, what gave it away was when some very rare hard to find brand new parts went missing a day or so after they arrived (3+months waiting for them), so when I thought back to who had been round, only one person had been, then I thought back to when other stuff had gone missing, yep you guessed, the same person had been round. Unfortunately I didn't have concreate proof, but needless to say the enxt time the said person turned up, they got told to f*ck off in no uncertain terms.
Now I am just sorting out CCTV for inside and outside the workshop, more expense I can do without, but it seems trustworthy people are getting harder to find !

Sad but so true. my RC 30 was stolen a few years ago and I strongly suspect it went to the IOM to go round in 38 mile circles.

If it's a forum member Dave, you should name and shame the t**t so others can take the neccesary precautions with a bit of 4x2 called "facial surgeory" It hurts even more when it's someone you trust so feel for ya. CCTV is the way to go though.
