I'm going in for knee reconstruction in few weeks both acl ligaments detached and my cartlidge is torn one side and folded under knee joint the other , the nhs would only give me replacement knee joint I'm 52 and had problems with knee dislocating for years , I got in touch with joint specialists MUSKAT they are physios and docs who specialise in knees , they harvest your hamstrings and use them instead as acl , hopefully they can get blood supply to my cartlidge and it will recover when repaired I didn't want replacement knee joint because of time they last and not being able to bend past 90 degrees

Good luck with that Will. It's interesting that they use some of the hamstring to replace ACL. Muscle tissue, as in the hamstring is structurally different to that of ligament, specifically being more elastic and extensible and has the ability to return to normal following contraction. Ligament serve as a supportive tissue and not made for contraction. I am sure with plenty of rehab you will be much better than now. Let us know how it all goes.

A colleague at work has had his knee done a couple of years ago same as what you are going in for and reckons as good as new although he has called it a day on the football front and has taken up mountain biking instead and has had no problems. My Manager has just had a replacement knee op only 2 Friday's ago but have not spoken to him yet but by what I have heard all went okay. As penno says Good luck and let us know how it goes. Rich

Thanks guys I hope it goes well 30 years of rugby and enduro's have taken there toll , I'm Hgv engineer and not being able to bend past 90 degrees on kneel down would be difficult , I was due to have it done December 4th I was on slab and they had problem in operating theatre so cancelled it , these couple of months have been hell waiting got hole in my calf muscle now from continually clenching muscles to keep knee stable

Will, I had a PCL reconstruction 3 years ago at 47. Knee ligament replaced with hamstring tendon and cartlidge re-attached with "bio-tissue". Rehabilitation is hard work but all good in the end.

My Hamstring harvesting was tender initially but not for very long, re-hab will be different for the ACL especially if they are doing both side so you will need to talk to your surgeon. I was in a knee brace and non-weight bearing for 6 weeks, started physio after 2 weeks and once I could get the pedal on a static bike all the way round things started to progress.

Had the best news today , just seen the top honcho who undertakes elbow replacements says without a doubt me Mrs has too have hers replaced asap he,s gobsmacked as was the knee surgeon that her joints have been allowed to go untreated to get into the mess there in now tells us her wrist has too be done also , wanted too replace by the end of the month but she has her first knee replaced next Tuesday..so once recovered well enough from that the elbow will be done before the other knee gets replaced...So pleased for her but petrified also as she had serious complications from last op...Finally after over a decade of painful suffering and a change of hospital.s she,ll be hopefully onto a better quality of life ....

In essence those that work at the coal face, nurses, paramedics generally care and work tirelessly giving care. However similar to many of the businesses in the private sector, fat cats cream the budget which then has a knock on effect on the day to day services. I have been battling for a year with the local Clinical Commisioning group for help in providing care for my Mum. Bureaucrats is one word I can use. Governments talk about further investment, but any investment must be well managed, and that is often the problem. It was also on the news this week that more nursing staff are now leaving than joining due to workload in that they are pressured to give care against the clock and no time for the thorough extra care they would like to provide. At least here in UK it is free. That is something else for discussion

So frustrated but happy today I took me Lady to hospital for first knee replacement booked n settled her in n left 1 1/2 hrs later phone call to come collect , apparently the nurse at pre assessment didn,t mention to the surgeon beforehand that me Lady is allergic to Nickel / silver etc ( its clearly written in her notes ) an they didn,t have a suitable replacement in stock.. Disaster narrowly avoided..

Mr K only just read this. I hope all is good with the good lady wife. Must be a terribly frustrating and frightening time. All the best to you both. Such a shame she had to suffer for such a long period. Having been through the Nhs many times because of motorcycles I’m now private. I love the Nhs but sadly they aren’t resourced properly. Hope she gets better soon.
