Started my first engine rebuild today, crank cases split and Crank removed, bearings are worn so it looks like a rebuild.
Will apologise in advance, going to be asking questions that have probably been covered many times before.
Has anybody had a Crank rebuilt by Chris Applebee or Taymar racing/motorcycles??
Can anyone recommend anybody that does vapour cleaning in the South East (i live in Sidcup) also powder coating.
Can i get away with using pattern parts on the power valves, bushes and seals??
Many Thanks
Tony...

Lots of questions Tony, I can recommend Grampian in Liverpool for your Crank rebuild though.

Think Chris Applebee gets a good rep
I've used Grampians a couple of times.
Post one day, rebuilt on day of arrival and posted back next
I've just built an f2 motor using pv bushes and seals from legend motorcycles
Under 70 quid for the 3 bushes, 3 seals and 3 o rings

I'm hoping to find someone closer to home, Grampian and PJME are miles away from me, i don't fancy posting it either.

Hi , good luck with your rebuild . A mate had a crank rebuild by Tamar racing and it was ok . Myself I have had various rebuilt by Armstrong engineering and Piston broke engineering. Norbo on this forum does exchange cranks, have you found his shop yet ?

How much to blast a set of cases, top and bottom? Chap in Swindon charged £200 not sure if that’s the going rate but he was local to me and did a cracking job so was happy to pay that

Yea, I think so. I usually pay £50 for cases and £40-50 for barrels. I used TSR years ago for Rd400 carbs when I was on the aircooled forum. They came back looking brand new. I hadn't removed the emulsion tubes at any point and thought I would check they were spotless before fitting. Just as well I did coz they were full of blasting media ! After a good rinse out all was fine though, and probably a one off as TSR have a good rep on that forum. Moral of the story is always check for residue after blasting, no matter how good the parts look. Dusty

Tsr vapour blasting service Sevenoaks Carl +1! TSR did a great job on my cases and assorted other bits. +2 TSR He did my my YPVS cases for £60 from memory. He's one of Bob Farnham's mates. I think Bob even sold his boring bar to him? If your feeling flush (around £200) he even does a finish called micropoloshing on gearboxes etc. It reduces friction and so more power less heat build up. Wouldn't of thought is necessary on an RD power output wise. Still they feel very slippery, so I can amazing an advantage on a powerful race bike. Jon

Thanks for all of your reply's.
Steely. yup I have founds Norbos shop, need plenty of self control whilst viewing all the goodies he has on there.
Barney. Had a look at your cases, looking good.
Carl. Just had a google and they seem to know what there doing, £50 for the Crank cases seems about right and it's not to far from me either.
hudtm60. Good luck with your build, will try to get some picture on here, you could have a look at the build dusty350 did on a ypvs engine, very interesting.
dusty350. was reading your YPVS engine rebuild thread during the week, found it very interesting and helpful too, did you remove the plastic breather nozzle at the back of the Crank Case before getting them blasted??

Don't worry about it Barney - if you are happy and they did a great job then don't give it any more thought. We all pay over the odds at some point for something ! Just make sure you get all media out of the cases. Although the slurry is less aggressive than grit blast media, you still don't want any reside left in them. Dusty

I see TSR also do powder coating, thinking of getting the clutch cover done but have read on here that you can get, if i remember rightly bubbling caused by air in the coating/aluminium What do people use to paint that Stator cover?? Tony

Hi Tony I left it in - he vapour process brings the plasic breather up like new as they can yellow with age. Cox's rinse well in hot water, and blast dry with high pressure air, but I also rinse them well when I get them home, just to be sure. I always wind bolts into all theadways, fully, to keep media out of them before blasting. After I remove the bolts I push a cotton bud down the holes to check. Sounds like overkill, but if any decent amount of media collects at the bottom of a hole, it can act like a bolt that's too long, and can pop the back out of a casting when you bolt the side case on. And regards powder coating any ally parts - bubbling is often caused by tiny air pockets in the castings, and other impurities. Pre heating parts can help to reduce the chances of that happening, although different castings seem to suffer more than others. Both my side cases on both bikes are powder coated, and they came up really well; 20170311_103629 by David Miller, on Flickr 20170311_124353 by David Miller, on Flickr Dusty

Dusty,
Thanks.
Did you plug the kick start hole prior to powder coating?? also what about the inside of the cover and the facing edges that go against the crank case, did you mask it up??

Hi I use a firm in Windsor for powdercoating, and they do lots of bike parts. They are very good at masking up so I don't need to. They don't go too thick with the powder so any over spray is negligible. The key is to use a firm that know what to coat, and not to coat, and the tapes and bungs they use have to be heat proof so any masking you do at home wont stay on anyway. I'm sure TSR will know his stuff Dusty

The alternative to powder coating is painting in 2k so its petrol proof.
I'm doing a YPVS top case, barrels, head and side cover at the moment. I'll post pictures if you want in a week or two?
It's my spare engine I've decided to sell as the one I had destined for my first LC will never really go in it if I'm honest.
